Like the previous poster said it would be an added advantage to have the Frozen ATPL.
However the minimum qualifications airlines in the region are looking for is a CPL/IR with ME thats is a Commercial Pilot License with an Instrument Rating along with a Multi Engine Endorsement.
What all these means is, having a Private Pilot License (PPL) allows you to fly for fun as long as you dont get paid. A Commercial Pilot License allows you to work in an airline and Airlines require you to have the Instrument Rating which allows you to fly under Instrument Conditions that simply put, in bad weather. Also the Multi Engine Endorsement is required since most modern airlines operate twin engine airliners.
The Steps of becoming a pilot is as follows,
First Step is to obtain your PPL which is usually 6 Months in duration and covers 45-50 hours of Flight Training.
After which you train for the CPL/IR which is another 100-150 hours of flying depending on the institute and the type of training you follow.
Finally about 10 hours for the Multi Engine Endorsement.
There are some upcoming Flight Training Schools in Sri Lanka offering the CPL/IR + ME for about 30 Lacks in 18 months (PM me if anyone needs more details)
Once you are done with the CPL/IR you are eligible to apply for any airline. Since any license issued by Sri Lanka is approved anywhere in world pretty much any one accepts the qualification. However being srilankan its only easy to go to the local airlines at first.
Once you apply and if you get selected you are called for an interview and you have to undergo a set of High Level tests which test you on your IQ, Team work, ability as well as Theory Knowledge.
If you are selected you are put on a Cadet Pilot Scheme where you undergo about 6-8 monts training with the airline (sponsored by them) which includes Airline oriented ground theory and a serious of Simulator Training to obtain your A320 Type rating which would qualify you to fly an Airbus A320 airliner.
Once the airline passes you out you would be passed out as an A320 Junior First Officer and from there onwards you have to slowly climb out.
Well the job is fun and certainly have its rewards. So if anyone is interested should certainly pursue their dream of flying. However in Sri Lanka there is only a limited amount of intakes per year. Used to be between 12-16 pilots per year not sure how many there are now with the new airlines operations.
