Damn. I typed alot and it got deleted.
Ill be brief.

Thanks for the heads up on sala and youtube. Tried to watch it on Edge network speeds but i had to wait 30mins till it buffered 1min of video. I gave up. But did see glimpses here and there of the map and poi.

My opinion is its too premitive, too few roads, too few poi. And some poi tags are full length text, its ignorable for a few poi but as time goes, poi increases, then u have problems, they will have to re invent a way to display poi from scratch then..

Am in the field collecting poi for u guys as usual..

Im skeptic of nos of poi they "actually" have and more skeptic of navigation outside of colombo...

Pretty soon there will be a new law wnich goes like this - the ban of all windscreen mountable items as it blocks ur view of the road..

I use a car phone holder which is tied to my A/c vent, thus is lower than the dash.

Ive been through "alot" of checkpoints with gps running and maps showing, none asked me what it is etc...

Thats it for now..

Found this info on the placename abbreviation problem of the Sri Lanka GPS map now we use.

"Zayeshk" has found a very very resourceful solution to this particular problem and has uploaded a map with place names too. Just download this map, gmapsup2.img, and upload it to your Garmin Mobile XT device. Leave the existing mapsupp.img in it as it is. Now you should be able to see place names WITHOUT names being abbreviated in to initials.

A BIG THANK YOU to Zayeshk.

This is what he says about his method:-

"I managed to find a method to show the labels. the labels were not shown due to a error in the text encoding used.the encoding used was not compatible with the garmin mobie XT version.so i changed the text encoding in the maps with GPSmapedit and extracted only the locations as a transparent map.add this file to the garmin folder in the phone, and the locations will be visible.the locations are not well classified as small town ,large town, medium town etc..They will all just be visible as small towns..I'll try to classify them later..this is what i could do for now.Use it ONLY for Garmin mobile XT.."

dude, i typed this yesterday but something happened and it wasnt uploaded, so here it is.

Congrats on ur purchase of E75. U wont be disappointed. Plz dont update phone firmware to V 202.12.01. It has issues, phone restarts for no reason and crashes garmin also. No solution for it yet in the form of firmware.

If ur gonna upload the data in 07-18-2010.zip. U have 2 choices, use the csv and run poi loader, see my previous posts for it. Or, just upload the "Poi.GPI" to /garmin/POI folder. Re start garmin and all data should show in where to/extras/custom poi/ .

If i were u, id keep the poi.gpi in /garmin/ as a copy coz sometimes when garmin crashes, u loose the custom poi datasets. So, then, all u need to do is to copy from /garmin/ the file called poi.gpi to /garmin/poi folder.

Enjoy the hard work we put into it to give gps navigation away free for everyone...

Sala Pro Sat

Hello
I'm new to this forum.
I just phoned Sala. They have all these units only at Colombo. I phoned Garmin local agent at Colombo. They said they will be finishing the lankan map soon and the product will be available to the market.
The Sala product is a chinese one. It costs about 70-80US$ on ebay. So obviously it is overpriced. If someone can copy the map details from a sala unit and update it to the forum thats the end of the Sala's high profit. It is wrong to obtain a massive profit from just a single unit. It will encourage ppl to make pirate copies of their map.
Dialogs unit is out. No point in discussing about their outdated mao.

Does any one have an iGo map of sri Lanka? Thats what they use in Sala Pro Sat.

Hi, this POI thing coupled with the 2nd transparent layer was very very useful last weekend when i was on a trip to trinco. POI was extremely helpful as i was able to find a fuel station just around Nilaveli when i thought i had to go to trinco town instead. Saved me a lot of time and that was crutial. Thanks ironbutcher_x for the POI file. Also I'm quite facinated with the amount of detail available on the map. It had almost all small roads that you would never expect to see on the map. Awesome stuff. Good work guys.

Couple of issues i noted on using the map, let me know if you have solved them already.

The POI thing just keeps on beeping when I'm on Galle road, gets a bit irritating. How do i stop that?
The voice directions are given too far in advance, like "Arriving at destination" comes up as far as 400m. Sometimes turn left and turn right comes up way in advance when there are couple of more roads to pass before you come to the actual road to turn. Can we control this. I have used garmin in europe and it is very precise when giving voice prompts. It gives an indication of the turn coming up as "turn left in 200m" and once you reach that junction, it again says "turn left". This kind of functionality is missing with this map.

Thanks for the excellent work so far.

hey dude, many thanks... as for your questions, am not sure what zip file you used and what target distances uve set but, for me, its set at 150m. ive also started posting "only" Gpi files for future posts of gps, as that simplifies the phone upload hell of a lot. no more messing with POI Loader, setting proximity alerts nothing, just copy the single "Poi.Gpi" over to memory card/garmin/POI/ and ur set.

the problem ur facing is u see the turn left ahead before u arrive at that bend is, coz, u havnt turned on "turn preview", but, sometimes, with some phones when u enable it, it does crash or lock the phone up, specifically the Nokia 5800 has this problem irrespective of firmware update. so, venture at ur own perile there.

as for the 'beeps', well, ur hearing the beeps coz proximity alerts are configured correctly, if u dont near any beep, then u should worry... lol.
and yes, it does get annoying at times, but, since i couldnt overlay the poi data on the map, i had to work around it, and i chose the proximity alert method, it serves 2 useful purposes, atleast for me, keeps the map clean and readable, and red pop up window only appears when ur near a marked POI. and ur concentrating on the road and not looking at the device while driving which is the worst u can do.

the file named town names has errors, i wont lie to u there, and am working on it as we speak but, i also mark new stuff, so the completion of town names is slow.

the reason why i incorporated the "town names" section is to make the map somewhat usable with no data as whats shown right now. but, as time went by, i kept on adding more and more poi in the form of hotels/petrol sheds etc. so, the town names section serves a useful purpose. also, not sure, if ur aware of this, but, say ur in a town or a place and u want to see whats closest to u, hotels/petrol sheds etc, just navigate into "custom poi" and u can either view everything in 1 page or by theme - myown1, petrol sheds, town names etc. u will see, respective poi closest to ur current gps location right at the top and progressively increasing with distance as u move down the list. so, u have a idea, ok, i have this and this ahead of me, now, the interesting thing bout this is, so, u see whats ahead, and u can select if u want to go to this place by clicking it.. and it will then, route u to that spot. thats the true potential behind the Custom POI section, which i didnt even realise until i started using that menu....

sorry, for not havin more petrol sheds in trinco, as when i went there, i marked about 100 petrol sheds etc, but all went puff due to a phone crash. and i was not that good with the garmin software back then. now, ive perfected it, as i had 3yrs of usage experience with it. when i do go that way, i do mark new poi and i always post it all on elakiri for u guys to use...

tissa has been completely mapped, as of, july 2010, every square inch of it.. ill be posting all that next week when i sort and verify the data...

btw, start using garmin mobile xt V 5.00.50 instead of V.5.00.60, as that has some problems. i too, went back to earlier version as of last night...

as for turning off the "annoying beep", id advice against it but its ur choice...

go to spanner/settings/proximity points/audio notification/ its set to "continous- all alerts" by default, atleast i set it that way, u have 3 options in there, ud figure it out... lol....

ofcourse u can turn it completely off by turning off custom poi sets but then u dont see or phone beeping for every poi u meet ahead on the road.

i listen to music while i drive and a phone beep doesnt annoy me that much, but in colombo it does annoy me... lmao.. i wont lie to u there...

the whole idea of the beep is to warn u, ahead of u is a custom poi, set by proximity alert target distance of 150m, i found that thats the ideal warning distance, except for checkpoints which is set at 200m ahead of u, u dont want to suddenly appear at the checkpoint. i lost track, i prefer audio warning as to staring at the device while driving approach, u can get away with staring at the phone while driving out of colombo where theres not that many vehicles on the road at the same time as u but in colombo, ull crash if u take ur eyes off the road even for a split second. i wish, this had "text to speech" function, but sadly no, so, i devised the audio beep thing. i didnt design it, i just figured out how to turn it on. software is designed by garmin, so, all tweaks r from them, i just optimized the functions and tried my level best to keep down the technical aspect as far as i could so everyone can use it... one noticeable advantage of this over sala gps is, sala u have to keep pressing and going through a bunch of menus to find what u want, this is almost like 2 step press/navigate thingy, so u save time and enjoy the drive than with sala. but this is only my opinion on the matter.

hope this helps...

ur welcome dude. but i wish u didnt buy the nokia 5800, if u had only read my earlier posts on the nokia 5800 and garmin mobile xt.

my best advice to u is to sell it if u can, and buy a nokia E75 or E71 or E72.

a small note - if u can, spread the word around about free gps navigation is available and where to get it from ( in here, by me and my team). more users the better. only a suggestion... ;)

ill be posting a redesigned 'How to " guide for Mobile XT users in the coming weeks, to help anyone with it, rather than reading all my 65 other posts to get it working... lol...

the sole purpose of giving this away free is best explained this way - what unix did to microsoft, am gonna do to gps and navigation for the benefit of whole of srilanka, completely free but help is greatly appreciated, in the form of new "POI datasets" being collected by you the end user and having sent them to me, i can incorporate them into future POI updates for the benefit of all...

restored accidently deleted POI datasets of mine

here is the restored zip, read the 'how to' on installation instructions.. attached pic in the zip shows how many POI have been loaded on the poi.gpi file...

more updates to come...

as always, when new poi updates are posted, previous " poi " posts automatically become obsolete. as new data sets are 'additions' to previous datasets posted by me. just keep that in mind..

this dataset is completely redesigned and optimized and future modifications are in the design plans...

for the novice or expert, just copy paste, NOT move, the "Poi.Gpi" to memory card/garmin/POI/ folder. no more messing with POI Loader or setting proximity alerts, as all have been taken care of with each gpi file.

if previous Poi.gpi is present in that folder when copying this file over, just over write it.. not merge old and new files ok...

do keep a extra poi.gpi copy in the memory card root folder, as when garmin crashes, u tend to loose the "custom poi" datasets aswell, so a quick copy/paste from memory card root folder back to mem card/garmin/POI/ restores the deleted poi.gpi.

Get rid of OVI maps. Not working in Sl. (Works, Only shows A-Grade Roads)
Use Garmin, along with Iron_Butchers Custom POI. ;-)

Google Maps, Ovi Maps charge you for Packet Data. Garmin Does not require Packet data connection for routing or Navigation. Just needs a 3G/Packet Data connection to get a sat lock. Afterwards, everything will work from local Data.
