I have come across this program, GspMid, a GPS mobile application with a map for Sri Lanka. Map gives a fairly complete details of Colombo with major/minor road names, etc. But other areas of Sri Lanka is rather bare, but should improve in future. (Wanted to see how it compares with Garmin Mobile XT).

http://gpsmid.sourceforge.net/index.html

It says, "... GpsMid is a free, fully offline, vector based map application for your mobile phone. It displays your current position on a zoomable map and can be used to search for and navigate to roads or points of interest of your liking. As all data is stored in a compact binary format on your phone you will incur no charges for extra data downloads. GpsMid uses map data by OpenStreetMap, a wiki based open source map...."

You can download GpsMid for Sri Lanka at http://gpsmid.sourceforge.net/prebuild/

Make sure to download both jad and jar files.

thx

Yes, a good and timely idea. Looks like you are the best to initiate it.

And, thanks for all your help and suggestions.

i think we should all do our part in collecting the data.

but, after i posted this, i realised whats the use of knowing the monitoring stations as its off limits to the public...

also, tsunami sirens went off @ 3:30am when it was over,in some parts of sl...

they neva went off in col 3-5.

and whats the issue with sl meteorogical site and it being run by SLT, yet speed of the website is like 14.4kbps dialup speeds and some pages are dated 2008, serious...-
and when u click a city this is what it said (im not joking here ) - Available when installation of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS)
are completed. and that page was edited 2008.

and when i tried accesing the site it said - This webpage is not available.

The webpage at http://www.meteo.gov.lk/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

= kind of funny when earthquake hit us...

I came across this Garmin link for Sri Lanka Map WITHOUT the place abbreviation problem we expeerienced before. This map shows road and place names without abbreviating them to initials.

"Free routable maps for Garmin brand GPS devices"

    http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php

Select Sri Lanka and you can download .img map for the country.

    Plus Point:-
Shows place and road names WITHOUT abbreviating them like the earlier Sri Lanka map.
It covers Colombo very well with all road/street names.

    Now the bad side:-
Map contains a part of South India and Maldives.
Other cities of Sri Lanka are not so well covered and other parts of the country is spotty. For those parts, old Sri Lanka map (even without place names) is preferable.

As this map is drawn from Open Street Map, we should be able to see improvement in coverage as they improve upon it. Just download and see.

This covers only Colombo right? For other parts, it contains the details of only main roads. So I still think the previous map with the secondary GMAPSUPP2.IMG file which shows the labels in all the country, is better.

Btw thx a lot for updating us about latest stuff.

This new map shows Colombo road/place names and is good for Colombo area. But the old map offers better details for the rest of the country, and even without road/palce names, it's preferable for out of colombo use for that reason.

I wish we could use both maps together. Even if you rename them gmapsupp.img and gmapsup2.img, you'll only get the first map displayed.
