Solution to Place Name Abbreviation Problem of Sri Lanka GPS Map

Found this info on the placename abbreviation problem of the Sri Lanka GPS map now we use.

"Zayeshk" has found a very very resourceful solution to this particular problem and has uploaded a map with place names too. Just download this map, gmapsup2.img, and upload it to your Garmin Mobile XT device. Leave the existing mapsupp.img in it as it is. Now you should be able to see place names WITHOUT names being abbreviated in to initials.

A BIG THANK YOU to Zayeshk.

This is what he says about his method:-

"I managed to find a method to show the labels. the labels were not shown due to a error in the text encoding used.the encoding used was not compatible with the garmin mobie XT version.so i changed the text encoding in the maps with GPSmapedit and extracted only the locations as a transparent map.add this file to the garmin folder in the phone, and the locations will be visible.the locations are not well classified as small town ,large town, medium town etc..They will all just be visible as small towns..I'll try to classify them later..this is what i could do for now.Use it ONLY for Garmin mobile XT.."

Oh. I told you about this previously. I thought you guyz know about it. Check the page 16.

This covers only Colombo right? For other parts, it contains the details of only main roads. So I still think the previous map with the secondary GMAPSUPP2.IMG file which shows the labels in all the country, is better.

Btw thx a lot for updating us about latest stuff.

    Thanks for the info though I missed it. My fault (;

Anyway, I'm happy with this dual img map solution -- better than before.

Sala offers GPS units in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's Sala GIS (Geo Information System) has developed the country's first GPS (Global Positioning System) map, where a space-based network of radio navigation system satellites can assist motorist find directions and plot routes.

Over 100,000 landmarks, places of interest, police stations, fuel sheds, banks, hospitals, hotels, parks and places of worship have already been pre-programmed on the Sala ProSat GPS.

3.5 inch Sala ProSat GPS unit is for sale for 35,000 rupees, the 4.3 inch unit is available for 42,000 rupees, while the 5.0 inch unit would cost 49,000 rupees....

Map Eka Rename karada? you have to rename the map which is downloaded from
http://rapidshare.com/files/61579171/SriLanka.img to gmapprom.img. extension has to be .img machan. Then copy gmapprom.img file to E:\Garmin in your mobile phone

    Here's the workaround again..

    INSTALLING GARMIN XT MOBILE

1)Download Garmin XT From this link

    http://www.garmin.com/software/GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50050.exe

    2) Just copy Garmin and other folders using provided application. (Just run exe file, please make sure to plugged your mobile through Data cable
and it's in USB Mass storage Mode)

    3) After copying, install the Garmin.sis file from phone using your phones built in file manager or similar (This should be locate inside E:\Garmin folder in your phone (Make note: E: is your Mobile phones Memory Card)

    UNLOCKING GARMIN XT MOBILE

    1) Open application on mobile

    2) Launch Garmin, go to Settings -> About (Make note of your UNLOCK ESN .WRITE IT SOMEWHERE.THIS IS YOUR UNIT ID)

    3) Launch the garmin keygen (its in the zip), and type in your "UNIT ID" in the bar

    4) Hit the first (top most) generate button to generate device unlock key.

    5) Copy this code to a new.txt file. Then save

    6) Rename the .txt file to sw.unl (be carefully not txt extension but unl)

    7) Put sw.unl file inside Garmin folder in your phones memory card and restart Garmin (Now on Garmin will recognize your inbuilt gps)

    INSTALLING MAPS

    1)Download Sri lanka Map From

    http://rapidshare.com/files/61579171/SriLanka.img

    2) ONLY three names are available so as to be recognized by Garmin: gmapprom.img gmapsupp.img or gmapsup2.img. (Gmapbmap.img is the base map of whole world so don't use this name except if you don't want a base map). so use one of these names for the maps. So only three different named maps can be used at the same time.

2)Rename Supplied Sri Lanka Map to gmapprom.img

    3) Then copy gmapprom.img file to E:\Garmin folder which is located inside your mobile (Make note: E: is your Mobiles MMC, it might be different in your phone)

    UNLOCKING MAPS

Sri Lanka Map is already Unlocked so no need to go beyond this step.

Nice work bro! works perfectly on my omnia 2

    Sala Pro-Sat GPS Navigation System

It looks like Sala's Device is better than Dialog's SatNav, both in terms of map detail and available options.

So, i,kinda curious. How good is dialog satnav and sala satnav when u compare with my design ? Are their claims of 100,000 poi correct or false informatio to get ppl to buy it ?

Does any of u guys bought this device ? Can ya do a youtube/ indepth review of it, pros and cons. And live pics...

As for dialog satnav which costs over 150,000 and works only in colombo, has "another"" bug, apparently you cant drive over 50kmh as the gps device crashes...

Got a question, if 1200 poi as in my data when viewed in google earth makes it very un-readable, how the hell do u view 100,000 poi all showing at once on a small screensuch as a nokia E and N series gps phone look like ?

I get a headache, just trying to view 1200 poi on the phone. I cant even imagine how 100,000 must look like...

Any one with live pics, plz post for us to see. Thanks

ps- am glad to say this, i just "officially" passed the 3000 poi barrier on the phone and it hasnt shown any slowing down side effects even with tracks continously running...

Below is 1years of gps tracks showing 5 different routes to tissa from colombo.

The "usual" routes most know are galle road and via ratnapura uda walawe bund, but there alot more.

As to how to navigate thru them, use my poi data, key points r ingiriya road end, ratnapura, point5(which is actually embilipitiya junction) and point5b. Plz note when u travel on the route point5 towards point5b, the map keeps on re calculating, ignore it, keep driving straigt, at the very end, ull come to a t junction turn left and ull arrive @ point5b.

    July 2010 updated Poi dataset

Hey guys, here is the new, re structured datasdt with alot of new additions. Ive also added a howto guide and a gpi file, so, u dont have to mess with poi loader and proximity alerts etc. Just upload the single Poi.gpi file to mem card/garmin/POI folder. But, before u do that, dont forget to delete the old "custom poi datasets" as, these replace them with re structured format with modifications to old files and some new files with brand spanking datasets...

Also attached a pic of how many poi is loaded...

    Enjoy...

Thanks for the info. Appreciate your help.

As for Sala GPS, I too wish someone'd upload details.

    Thanks.

Today i was doing some calculations "really bored.. Lol" and i discovered something, for 3000 poi its 86 kb file, taking 100,000 poi in the case of sala gps, i arrived at the magical file size to store all 100,000 poi. Ur not gonna believe it, its "3MB". Thats all the space u need on a memory card. These days you get 32GB memory cards,so, imagine how much u can store...thus 3MB poi file is easily transferable via email or via poi loader, if we can get hold of it.

Also while i was on this, i did some other calculations, for a 1GB memory card, u can store, wait for it, "35 Million Poi" easily. But, max ive seen stored in a gps is 6 million poi and its a garmin... So, im guessing 256MB card...
