Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), the nation’s number one integrated telecommunications service provider and the leading broadband services provider in the country is proud to announce an automatic 100% bandwidth upgrade for its existing ‘Entrée’ Broadband customers who will now enjoy speeds up to 1Mbps; and a significant increase of included data for all volume based broadband packages.
Customers who are using the ‘Entrée’ (512kbps) Broadband Package will now experience downlink speeds doubled up to 1Mbps with this automatic bandwidth upgrade, and will enjoy an additional 500MB that amounts to 1.5GB of total data volume every month with no additional monthly charge.
‘Home Plus’ (formally known as ‘Xcite Plus’) package (1Mbps downlink speed) will be upgraded with not only a usage volume increase to 8GB , BUTwith a 25% reduction of the monthly charge to Rs. 1,500/= from Rs. 2,000/=. Other volume based packages also now include increases of up to 100% in the included data: ‘Office Plus’ (2Mbps downlink speed now includes 15GB) & ‘Xcel plus’ (4Mbps downlink speed now includes 21GB).In addition, for all volume based ADSL broadband packages, SLT has reduced by 30% the charge for each additional 1MB from 50 cents/MB to 35 cents/MB.
All existing SLT broadband customers who are using Entrée, Home Plus, Office Plus & Xcel Plus volume based packages will benefit from the free speed boost and increase of data volumes to their internet experience. These enhancements will be available automatically to broadband users from 1st of January 2011 onwards.
Commenting on this broadband revolution in Sri Lanka, the CEO SLT, Greg Young said, “Sri Lanka’s broadband market is rapidly expanding and we are proud to say that SLT continues to drive increasing penetration and access to broadband. We have introduced significant improvements for our customers in quality of service, international internet bandwidth and new broadband packages to suit every customer requirement. All our volume based broadband packages are free of bandwidth control and contention, to provide customers with a rich internet experience. These latest initiatives continue to support the Government’s ICT development policy and program.”
Adding further Mr. Greg Young CEO SLT said, “We believe the true value of broadband is making it possible for customers to enjoy exciting new services and now SLT customers can experience broadband with up to 1Mbps downlink speed for just Rs. 500/- a month. We wish all our customers a truly Happy Broadband New Year.”

Its good if this really happens. But I remember seeing that they've said something about defining broadband as 1mbps and + connections
Thats good in a way, but will it make a loophole to ISPs to give low quality service & speed in other packages like 512 kbps etc? (especially SLT- ADSL packages like 512kbps unlimited)
Because 512kbps ADSL is the most common unlimited package i can think of. SO if these laws are not effective on that, ISP can degrade the service since it will be effective to limit bandwidth in a package that has majority of the users (so they can keep up with specified speeds in 1mbps+ line without much upgrades on infastructure).

I know what you are talking. TRC ordered to define broadband speed as 1mbps+. So SLT just increased their LIMITED BANDWIDTH packages to that 1Mbps limit. Because its the cost effective method to them. Otherwise if they increase the speed of unlimited packages they'll face a huge problem. coz they can't tolerate that unlimited users bandwidth.
