Postal strike off: Ex Judge to probe allegations against PMG

The Joint Trade Alliance Postal Unions has decided to call off their three-day strike action following an assurance by Posts Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga that a retired judge will be appointed shortly to look into the allegations leveled against Post Master General M. K. B. Dissanayake.
The unions alleged that the PMG had resorted to many malpractices within the Department including promoting tenders without the proper criteria. The tug-of-war between the unions and the postal chief resulted in the strike last week.
Minister Kumaratunga told The Sunday Island yesterday that a two-month period will be given to complete the inquiry as he believes that any party should be given a reasonable timeframe to express their point of view or to clear allegations level against them.
He said that in the meantime the PMG will come under the supervision of the newly-appointed Postal Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando.
Kumaratunga said that the tussle between the unions and the PMG broke out at a time the Department was moving towards new technology and innovation to change the age-old, archaic system.
"We have achieve a target set by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the contribution of everybody is vital for the betterment of the institution," he noted.
Joint Trade Alliance Spokesman Chanitaka Bandara said that they were compelled to resort to strike action as the authorities failed to initiate an inquiry into the allegations made against the PMG.
"There are 2.2 ordinary letters, 200,000 registered letters and 200 postal parcels which had piled up due to the three-day work stoppage. We would clear them before the New Year even by working 24 hours," he assured.
