avoid from main places like Auckland,Manawatu-Wanganui, cause the prices of houses are not much cheap. it would be more benefit select a place like Canterbury,Waikato ,Otago cool places. but remember most of people live around Auckland and Wellington so you can easily find an university in these cities. South Island is totally a rural area and are suffering from depopulation. I think that's why people can easily buy lands cheaply. living cost is not high
you can buy whatever you want if you have a job unlike in US and SL.

the salary is calculated per hour and normally the salary depend on field to field. finance and bank sectors people can get more salary like so IT people.
it would be around 800 US$ per week = 80000 SLR.
and you can also find part time jobs from job agencies. for that just make a search on Google then you can find dozen of job agencies. keep in touch with them. once they got a job they will inform you.however you are only allowed to work upto 20 hours per week.
let me tell you this. students can't have highly paid jobs. most of them do retails, food, like those small jobs. it's not enough to make a quick buck. cause those fields only pay around 20 NZ$ per hour depend on place to place.then weekly income would be around 20*20= 400 NZ$ = 30,000 SLR per week.but somehow it's enough to cover the expenses. join few more people and rent a house would be a nice idea cause then you don't want to pay the entire rental alone.

good luck. if you have any questions regarding NZ ask from me.I born in there and staying in SL now.

i came to new zealand last 13 th of feb and studying at southern institute of technology..its in south island a city called invercargill....weather eka nam darunui..summer and winter...comparing to wellington...christchurch...and auckland...other than that everything is all good...around here...i got a job at macdonalds working as a crew member get paid 13$ per hour...but there are jobz here that u can get paid upto 25$ per hour places like meat factories....living cost is very low comparing to city areas...population is averagely low good place to live if your looking for a quite and calm neighborhood
