Insomnia is a serious condition which primarily affects your neurological aspect of your body leaded by the brain. If it is to be persistent it will eventually lead to severe systemic diseases(Diseases that affect multiple organs) in your body with regards to certain physiological diseases excluding psychiatric conditions

    Chagas disease
    Narcolepsy
    Cushing's syndrome
    Fybromylagia
    Weil's Disease
    Sarcoidosis
    Polymyositis
    RestlessLeg syndrome
    Hughes stovin syndrome
    Vasculitis
    Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
    Von hippel lindau syndrome
    Bronchitis
    Sleep apnea
These are just some to mention that has a long relation with Sleep Deprivation

Hence sleep deprivation or lack of sleep without an argument alters your immune system and cause a sudden fluctuate immune responsive depending on the person these are risks/effects/symptoms of ultimate Sleep deprivation
    Depression
    Hallucination
    Hand tremors
    increased blood pressure
    increased stress hormone levels
increased risk of diabetes (specially type II)
    Nystagmus
    Obesity
    Psychosis
    Schizophrenia
    Bipolar Disorder
    and finally
    Death

    Drugs used to treat insomnia
Benzodiazepines include Flurazepam, Lorazepam, Quazepam, Clonazepam Flunitrazepam(roofies, also known as date rape drug, only to be used in severe cases)

    non-benzodiazepines include Zolpidem, Zaleplon

some atypical antipsychotics include Quetiapine, olanzepine

and some antidepressants include Mirtazapine which is known to help both the depression and insomnia with patients who suffering from both

and by far the most popular drug is Melatonin which is an over the counter drug which is known to help sleep.

So if you have or if you believe you are not getting enough sleep, you better go consult a Neurologist, if you suffer from a physiologically aspect of insomnia or go see a psychiatrist if you suffer from a Psychological form of insomnia
