some say he was depressed. people can say anything just about anyone. but that doesn't make them right. lord buddha wasn't even close to a scientist according to modern standards. he didn't analyze problems, he rejected reason, he didn't create abstract theories to explain concrete phenomena, he didn't use statistics and last but not least he didn't even generalize his knowledge.

according to ur standards a psychopath or someone with autistic traits who lack conscience to some extent unlike that of a psychopath can never be literate. they are just doomed to illiteracy. but scientific community says otherwise. it consists of a huge number of autistics some of whom even doesn't understand why other people weep over the lose of their loved ones. are u saying they are nothing but a bunch of nitwits ? is that how u justify ur claim that robert openheimer was illiterate ?

yes they are nothing but a bunch of nitwits  an openheimer was a well known coward

to be intelligent u have to learn
    to learn reading/writing is essential..

    not necessarily
being literate helps to be intelligent or to be book smart
but there are plenty of intelligent illiterate people who are road smart

reading the by far the most efficient way to get knowledge...
also its impossible to learn different subjects without written sources,,
for example its impossible to learn match for a person who dont know how to write or read...

reading surely helps to be both book and road smart
my point being there are lot of people who are intelligent but illiterate .
if you cant amass knowledge without reading ,then how come the Buddhist monks were able to retain and pass the knowledge of lord Buddha?

well , i dont have much knowledge of how Buddhist ideology was passed for 2500 years,, but, I've heard about some written sources which current followers are refereeing to. i know that monks are referring those texts.

not exactly brother, Buddhist manuscripts (tripitika) are believed to be first written by buddagosha thero some 1500 years ago. ( the polonnaru era/ under the reign of king walagamba) so until then????

from my point of view intelligence is relative....an ape will be more intelligent than other animals but lesser than humans, it may not be able to develop anything new but education and scientific thoery is needed for new things.
so comparing religous leaders and saying that they were very intelligent is not fair to modern day science which has done so much to our lives. we must give credit to even sitting any typing on EK from any corner of the world thanks to science.
religious leaders are just that...nothing else. I dont think they can envisage the next earthquake or the next solar eclipse with 100% accuracy.
in short intelligence is born with and can be enhanced by being literate
but being literate does not mean you are always super intelligent...

just my thoughts.....some comments are very interesting!!!
