An explosion at a fertilizer plant near Waco has reportedly left dozens of people dead, hundreds injured and caused a nursing home to collapse, trapping residents inside.
The blast at the plant in West, Texas at 7.50pm (CST) on Wednesday left fires burning as a three-mile radius around the blast zone has been evacuated amid fears of a secondary explosion.
Firefighters, who are all volunteers in West, have rushed to the scene of the huge inferno. Six or seven fire crew are unaccounted for following the blast.
Victims with blast wounds and lacerations were being taken to local hospitals in Waco. Up to 200 people are injured, some 40 critically and two are currently undergoing surgery. Two children have been transported to a nearby pediatrics' unit and nine flown to a specialist burn unit in Dallas.

The blast could be heard as far away as Waxahachie, 45 miles to the north.
The cause of the explosion, 20 miles north of Waco, has not yet been identified. West is a small town of around 2,500 people.

Hospitals struggle to cope with causalities as dozens of wounded pour into emergency rooms
At least ten to 15 buildings have been completely demolished, West EMS Director Dr George Smith told CNN, as he feared many people were trapped under rubble.
Rescue efforts were being hampered due to hazardous chemicals in the air following the explosion.
First responders have been wearing respirators to protect themselves from dangerous chemicals.
A fire broke out at the plant and erupted into an explosion while firefighters were battling the flames.
Texas Department of Public Safety D.L. Wilson told Reuters that a nursing home collapsed from the blast and that people were believed to be trapped inside.
