    "Square root" කියලා ප්‍රශ්නෙ අහලා තියෙන විදියටනම් positive/negative දෙකම නේද answer එක වෙන්න ඕනෙ? positive විතරක් නෙමේනෙ?

    √ මේ square root symbol එක define කරල තියෙන්නෙ real numbers වලට. ඒ නිසා positive එක එන්නෙ.
    හැබැයි equation එකක් solve කරද්දි plus or minus සලකන්න ඕනෙ.

    square root function eka define karanne non-negative to non-negative set ekata. Ethokata root eka positive zero neminam.

    sqrt(9)=3 is normal convention

    Confusion ati wenne equation solve karadi + or - dana widiyata

    x^2=9 -----> (3^2)=9 or (-3^2)=9 ------->x=3 or x=-3
    x=+sqrt(9) or - sqrt(9)
    x=+3 or -3

    No actually, you NEVER use a plus or minus sign while taking a square root. let me clear somethings first.

    What is √25 ?

    ±5 or just +5

    Well, the answer is the latter, that is, just the positive 5.

    BUT, if

    x² = 25

    x = ±√25

    then, x =±5

    why?

    So basically when you take a square root of any positive number, the result is always positive. That clears out my first point, but what about the second? Why did we take a plus or minus there.

    Well, we actually skipped a few steps there. Let’s re-do our second problem, this time, without skipping any steps.

    x² = 25

    √x² = √25

    Now, what on Earth is √x². It is just x, right?

    Wrong.

    It is actually | x | which is the mod of x. The positive value of x.

    The square root ALWAYS gives a positive result.

    √x² or √(-x)² = | x |

    • if x ≥ 0, then | x | = x
    • if x < 0, then | x | = -x
    Let’s continue,

    √x² = √25

    | x | = +5

    Alright, now, do we have any idea about the sign of x? No we don’t.

    Can it be positive? Well yea, why not. Can it be negative? Why not. There aren’t any conditions which were set for x earlier. It can be ≥ 0, or < 0, it doesn’t matter to us, as long as it is a solution to our problem.

    So, | x | = ±x

    Continuing,

    | x | = +5

    ±x = +5

    Multiplying both sides by ±,

    x = ±5

    So, Do I always need a plus or minus sign when taking a square root?

    Depends. If you are trying to find out the value of a variable, generally, yes. If you need to find out the square root of a number, no, never.
