One of the best documentaries on the history of Afghanistan's never ending war (y)

Murder of the King > Rise of Communism > Soviet invasion > Rise of Mujahadin > Brutal Regime of the Mujahidin > Taliban coming to power > USA invasion > Democracy > Taliban taking back Afghanistan

    Its all here

Any political appraisal of Afghanistan is incomplete if it does not cover the pre-Soviet era. Specially seeing the stretch of time between the last days of the Persian kingdom, the subsequent anglo-afghan wars up until the soviet occupation really puts things into perspective. Then you really understand the mentality and the ethnic despondency of Afghan people. Their strengths and their disappointments.

Then you understand that Talibanism is not really a glitch in their historical development, on the contrary- it’s kind of their status quo. I have written about this many a time in this forum, but we have to leave the muslim world to the muslims. Let them figure things out, if their ethos works well then good for them. If it shits the bed then they’ll deal with the consequences. Who knows, maybe a less stringent form of theocracy will emerge out of it someday. Give it some time to regulate itself without external perturbations.

My only worry is the involvement with China. I think the Chinese will exacerbate and exploit the middle east issue even more than the Americans did.

Think other than the people in the capital, do the majority of the people in Afghanistan even want the kind of democracy that is practiced in the west? Aren't they loyal to their religion & their tribes above anything else?

The only downside is the Taliban will close the schools & take the women back to the stone age again after they enforce sharia
