Question- to move a stationary car with a manual gear box why it required to use the 1st gear?

    Answer -
In a car with a manual gearbox, the 1st gear is required to move a stationary vehicle because of the following reasons:

    1. Higher Torque Output

The 1st gear has the highest gear ratio, which means it provides the maximum torque to the wheels.
This high torque is essential to overcome static friction and get the car moving from a standstill.

    2. Lower Speed for Better Control

The 1st gear allows for smooth acceleration at low speeds, which is crucial for starting without stalling.
If you try to start in a higher gear (e.g., 2nd or 3rd), the engine might struggle and stall due to insufficient torque.

    3. Engine Load and RPM

In 1st gear, the engine runs at a relatively higher RPM with less resistance, making it easier to start smoothly.
Using a higher gear would cause the engine to lug (under-rev), leading to poor performance or stalling.

    4. Practicality in Different Conditions

The 1st gear is crucial in uphill starts or when carrying heavy loads, where more power is needed.
In some cases, on flat roads, a car with a powerful engine may start in 2nd gear, but this is not ideal for most vehicles.

    Conclusion:
Using 1st gear ensures a smooth and controlled start by providing maximum torque and preventing engine stall. Once the car is moving, you can shift to higher gears for better speed and efficiency.

    Question-
As per this formula Horsepower = Torque x RPM / 5,252, how both the rpm & torque are higher in 1st gear?

    Answer-
    The formula you mentioned:

    Torque x RPM / 5,252

helps explain the relationship between torque, RPM, and horsepower, but it does not mean that both torque and RPM are always high in 1st gear at the same time.

Why Torque is Higher in 1st Gear?

    1. Gear Reduction Effect:

In 1st gear, the transmission provides a high gear ratio (e.g., 3:1 or higher), meaning the engine’s torque is multiplied before reaching the wheels.
This results in higher torque at the wheels, which is needed to overcome inertia and get the car moving.

    2. Low Speed, High Force:

Since the wheels turn slowly in 1st gear, more force (torque) is applied per revolution, helping move the car from a standstill.

Why RPM is Higher in 1st Gear?

    1. Engine RPM Increases Quickly:

When you press the accelerator in 1st gear, the engine revs up quickly because the wheels are moving at a slower speed relative to the engine speed.
Due to the high gear ratio, the engine must spin faster to provide the necessary power.

    2. Short Gear Ratio:

The 1st gear is designed for acceleration, not top speed. That’s why you reach high RPM quickly before shifting to 2nd gear.

But How Can Torque & RPM Be High at the Same Time?

The engine’s torque output (measured at the crankshaft) is not the same as wheel torque after gear reduction.

In 1st gear, the engine may operate at a lower RPM initially, but because of gear multiplication, the torque at the wheels is very high.
As the car speeds up, RPM increases but torque at the wheels starts decreasing as you shift to higher gears.

    Final Clarification

In 1st gear, the engine RPM is not at its peak initially, but it climbs rapidly as you accelerate.
Torque is highest at the wheels due to the high gear ratio, but engine torque depends on the RPM and load.
Horsepower (power output) remains the same before and after the gearbox, but the distribution of torque and RPM changes due to gearing
