Work on the Matara-Beliatta railway line will come to an end by 2017. Over 8o percent of work is over, Project Director V. Amaratunga said. He said the biggest railway station in the south will be set up in Beliatta. The project is funded by China. About 229 acres belonging to 1,225 families were acquired. The railway line will run across the Matara-Hambantota main road at Beliatta and Dikwella.
Railway stations will be set up at Kekanadura, Babarenda and Wewrukannala. The railway line will run through two tunnels. The tunnel at Nakuttiya will be the largest railway tunnel in the country, Amaratunga said.

Over 40 pc of Matara - Beliatta railway line complete - Nov 06 2015
The construction work on the Matara - Beliatta railway line is in progress. Over 40 percent of the construction work is complete, according to project director V. Amaratunga.
The construction work will come to a climax in 2016. Amaratunga added that under the project, the southern region's largest railway station will be built at Beliatta.
He said the tunnel at Nakuttiya will be the longest tunnel in the country which has an extent of 606 metres.
A total of 229 acres belonging to 1,225 families were acquired for the project. Compensation up to Rs. 978 million was paid to them to launch the construction work, the project director said.
Amaratunga said another tunnel will be set up at Babatenda which would be 238 metres long. He added that railway stations will be set up at Kekanadura, Babarenda and Wewrukannala while sub-stations will be set up at Piladuwa and Weherahena.
