The Pajero was first introduced as a prototype at around 1978 and first showed at Tokyo motor show in 1981. Three-door, short-wheelbase model first released for sale in 1982.
It was arguably the most comfortable and car-like 4-wheel drive made in Japan at the time. IMHO, the first Japanese car to bridge the gap between a 4 wheel-drive and SUV properly. Independent suspension at the front was revolutionary at the time for a 4WD. The rear end had coil sprung suspension with a solid axel. I still remember how modern the cockpit was back in late 80`s, even the instrument cluster was so nicely made. The Top Spec Super-wagon with a big sunroof was just fantastic at the time.
This was a massive advancement (imagine the millions spent on Research and Development for such a major model change) from Mitsubishi, from this:

Remember this was when Toyota was still producing FJ/BJ 40`s and 60`s. These had leaf spring (dunu-kola) suspension in both front and rear and were like horse carts compared to the Pajero back then (arguably the FJ 60`s had better interior). Even the later model J70 which came out in 1984 was inferior to the Pajero in comfort and relative luxury.

Even the Range Rover was quite utilitarian back in 1982 with two solid axels with coil sprung suspension both front and back. 40 years later, I have personally seen how well made Pajero interior is, when compared to a Range Rover. Japanese plastics and rubbers are of better quality to survive 40 years. Range Rover interiors are mostly deteriorated after 40 years.
