You cannot look at one manual and generalize it for all the vehicles.

S is for Speed/Sports in most cases. In Toyotas I use S for overtaking vehicles but I felt S works very well for hill climbs. S for traveling downhill doesn't make sense. It just keep the vehicle on high RPMs without shifting up (stress the hell outta gearbox). In German and English vehicles S is for Sport without a doubt coz I can even manually shift in S mode. Certainly not meant for downhill driving. That's what B is for (Engine Braking).

Using S for downhill driving in a high horsepower vehicle is a certain death sentence if you accelerate by mistake.

When should you use S gear?

    SituationWhy S is useful
Driving uphillKeeps engine in lower gear to maintain power without struggling.
Driving downhillProvides engine braking, reducing the need to keep braking.
Overtaking quicklyKeeps revs high for faster response and better acceleration.
Sporty drivingFeels more responsive and powerful compared to to
Sport mode alters the car's engine and transmission settings to prioritize performance.

S = Slope not Sport in JDM Toyotas with Super CVT-i transmission. If you buy a real G superior with 2000cc engine you will get tiptronic gears (Shift points only ) with CVT which has an actual sport mode. Used as Police cars in Japan in 2010s.

Going down a slope though, not up

Well either way it will work. For going up engine will rev more to give some additional torque early. For decending sharp slopes better to use B mode. I never bothered to use anything other than D as 1500 engine is simply getting strained for nothing. Also Toyota CVTs have some engine breaking upto 40 kmph even in D mode.

Yep realistically Premio drivers would probably be fine even if they never use those gears

It’s not like we have kilometers long steep inclines where brake fade can occur in such a relatively lightweight car

Buuuut for the record let it be known that the manufacturer claims both gears are meant for engine braking 😬

In the Japanese manual it only says "slope" and doesn't say which direction :) . Btw when descending from Nuwara Eliya/ Hatton kinda roads, it might be useful as B mode is too much engine braking in petrol Toyotas. Hybrids have a different B mode with regen which is actually useful and I have used it regularly when coming down in Hatton/Awissawella road.
