i think that's an overly simplistic statement. humans aren't machines designed to work toward selfish goals. viruses, may be. but not humans. people tend to group together and work towards a common goal even in the absence of some external enforcer.

and the other major component in a society is its beliefs. nobody forced the ancient Egyptian kings to build pyramids. they made them because of their beliefs. even capitalism is based on a set of beliefs. i think beliefs are a crucial ingredient ignored and criticized by everyone.

that's a very loose definition of selfishness you have there. in that sense every act can be defined as selfish. even so called selfless acts are performed for that small rush of dopamine. or something is not done to avoid a bad feeling. that's reducing responsibilities and maintaining of the status quo into biology in that sense i think u are right. we do everything either to feel good or not feel bad.

but what's normally called selfless acts are those which don't directly give the performer any monetary or material reward. i was using the word selfless in that sense, not in the reduced biological sense i think that kind of common sense selflessness is possible without so called socialism

besides the most important thing is socialism upholds the importance of human society. that's overly anthropocentric and cannot help fight the problems world is facing today. i think a societal structure based on non-humanism where plant and animals life is held sacred will be much better than a material based socialism. have u seen the movie avatar ? if not u should see it. it has few references to so called primitive societies. that's one alternative which is neither socialist no capitalist.
