Sri Lanka Navy’s largest passenger vessel ‘Jetliner’ which served as a life line between the North and East during the Humanitarian Operations, this morning left on its final voyage to Indonesia to be handed over to its owner with the lease period coming to an end, the Navy said.
“We leased the ship from an Indonesia company in 2006 and the rent period is now over and the ship has to be handed over soon,” Navy Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said adding that, “the ship sailed for Indonesia this morning and it would not come back again.”
He said the ship has discontinued all operations in Sri Lanka and will not be undertaking any reservations in future.
The Jetliner passenger vessel played a pivotal role in the Naval operations during the humanitarian operations. It ferried thousands of security forces personnel, civilians and goods between Trincomalee and Kankesanthurai ports till the main ground supply routes were cleared and restored after the dawn of peace.
It also holds the record of carrying more than three thousand security forces personnel in one voyage. With this new venture it is set to continue her valuable service to the nation in a different sphere.
In 2010, the Jetliner was deployed for tourism purposes- taking onboard weddings, corporate events and other social functions. Since then a large number of weddings and events were held on board of the ship earning millions of rupees for the country.
