It should be alright in May. But note that May is quite hot and sometimes rains. But hotels should be cheaper.
We returned from Phuket just a few weeks ago before the earthquake. The weather wasn't bad then but the summer will set in.

The southern Thailand regions, such as Krabi, Phuket, and Koh Samui, and the central Thailand region are considered safe by Thai travel agents. In any case if you are worried avoid staying in high rise hotels.
