    * Sri Lanka hopes to restore crude oil imports from Iran
Sun, Jul 24, 2016, 07:20 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 24, Teheran: The Sri Lankan Minister of Petroleum Resources Development Chandima Weerakkody has expressed hope that Colombo will resume oil and gas purchases from Iran, Petro Energy Information Network of Iran reported.

Following a meeting with Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zanganeh in his Tehran office on Sunday, Weerakkody said Sri Lanka regards Iran as a big name as an oil supplier to the south Asian country and hoped that the two countries will sign good energy deals in the future.

He said Iran and Sri Lanka have been close and old friends and Iran is regarded as a key name in oil supply for Sri Lanka as the country's oil refinery is built for processing Iranian crude.

Weerakkody said despite the sanctions that curbed Iran's oil exports to Sri Lanka, the people still believed that the refinery was operating with Iranian crude oil.

The official said that the removal of sanctions is good news for the Sri Lankan people and government, adding, "We had very good talks today and we hope that the remaining issues will be resolved for enhancing mutual ties."

Speaking to Sri Lankan Minister, Zanganeh hoped that after the Sri Lankan minister's visit to Iran and talks, there will be an agreement for Iran's crude exports and Iran's oil sales to Sri Lanka will resume as it used to export 40,000 bpd oil to the country prior to sanctions.

Iran supplied 93 percent of Sri Lanka's oil needs by issuing approximately forty thousand barrels of oil daily supply, but after the imposition of sanctions, Sri Lanka's oil imports from Tehran stopped. Sri Lanka's only oil refinery at Sapugaskanda is can only process crude oil imported from Iran.

Pointing to Sri Lanka's oil debt to Iran to the tune of 251 million dollars, Iranian Minister said regarding implementation of the JCPOA, the ways of debt payoff should be clarified. Since debt settlement was stopped due to sanctions, he said the issue will be discussed in talks with the Sri Lankan party, hoping to reach a result.

Speaking about Sri Lanka's need to buy LPG, Zanganeh said there are global issues that need to be resolved.

The impact of Iran sanctions - in charts
    BBC 10 May 2018

Uncertainty is hanging over the future of the Iran nuclear deal following the US decision to withdraw.

Under the 2015 agreement, Iran agreed to curb its nuclear activities in return for the lifting of sanctions imposed by the UN, US and EU.

President Donald Trump's announcement that the US will leave the deal means that Washington will begin reinstating sanctions.

But what will the economic impact be on Iran and its trading partners?

    _101237897_iranoilgasexp-nc.png

    What happens next?

The US Treasury has said that there will be wind-down periods of 90 and 180 days before sanctions are implemented.

The first deadline, on 6 August, will affect the purchase of US dollars, trade in gold and certain other metals, as well as aviation and the car industry.

The next wind-down period will end on 4 November and will target Iran's financial and oil institutions.

At the end of the 180 days, sanctions will also be reinstated against individuals who were previously on the US Treasury sanctions list.

    _101237905_iranoilproduc-nc.png

    _99460865_iran_economic_growth_640-nc.png

    Who buys Iran's oil?
Iran is one of the world's largest oil producers, and the export of oil and gas is worth billions of dollars each year.

But both the country's oil output and its GDP fell noticeably under international sanctions.

    _101237903_irancustomers-nc.png

And while the US itself is not a major customer, foreign companies and other countries that continue to deal with Iran after the wind-down periods will face US sanctions if they fail to reduce or end their trade.

    _101238819_iran_us_trade-nc.png

European oil companies could be particularly hit - French company Total signed a $5bn deal with Iran after the agreement, while BP has a joint venture to operate the Rhum gas field with Iran's state oil company.

    What about other sectors?
The sanctions will have an impact on other industries too.

Under the announcement, companies selling commercial aeroplanes to Iran will be particularly hit.

Companies such as Airbus and Boeing - which had agreed deals with Iran to sell 100 and 80 aircraft respectively after the 2015 deal - stand to lose billions of dollars because of the use of US-made parts in construction.

Tourism in Iran had also benefited from the nuclear deal, with visitor numbers increasing from 3.8 million visitors in 2012 to over 5 million in 2015, and this could also be affected by renewed sanctions.

    _101237902_chart-iran_nonoil_exports-k2pr0-nc.png

    What are the options?
There is still some hope for Iran's trading partners, as the other parties to the 2015 nuclear agreement - the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany - have pledged their continuing support for the deal.

The US government has said that exemptions for those dealing with Iran are possible, although it has not yet given any details about which companies could benefit.

If that fails, the EU could also use a blocking statute to protect companies conducting business with Iran from US sanctions, as it did when it lifted its own sanctions on Cuba.

May 11, 2018 (LBO) – Fuel prices in Sri Lanka will be revised every two months under a new cabinet approved pricing formula, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said.

“We will be reviewing according to the Platts Singapore benchmark prices,” he told reporters in Colombo.

“This means the price could either increase or decrease.”

Sri Lanka has the lowest fuel prices in South Asia. The price of the price of one litre of Petrol (92-Octane) in Nepal is 149 rupees while in Bangladesh and India its 159 and 169 rupees respectively.

At present Sri Lanka charges around 58.80 rupees per litre of petrol.

“This is also the lowest tax rate in the the region,” Eran Wickremeratne, state minister for Finance who was also at the press briefing said.

Sri Lanka increased the prices of Petrol (92 octane) by 20 rupees to 137 rupees and petrol (95 octane) increased to 148 rupees while auto diesel will go up to 109 rupees and super diesel will be sold at 119 rupees effective from midnight , Thursday.

Keeping an election promise the government under President Maithripala Sirisena reduced fuel prices sharply in 2015.

In 2015 the price of a litre of 92-octane petrol was reduced from 157 to 117 rupees while the price of 95-octane petrol has been come down from 158 to 128 rupees.

The Rajapakse government charged 157 rupees for petrol when the international oil price was US 49 dollars, now the price is US 77 dollars, Samaraweera said.

“Because of the volatility in the market we beleive the price will go upto US 80 dollars soon.”
