1. The "Drill and Fill" Method (Most Effective)
Since the tree's nutrient transport system is spread through the trunk, the most reliable way to kill it without cutting it down immediately is to inject herbicide into the core.
- Tools: A power drill with a long bit (at least 6-10 inches) and a high-concentration herbicide (like Glyphosate or Triclopyr).
- Process:
- Drill 4–5 holes around the base of the trunk at a downward 45-degree angle.
- Make the holes deep enough to reach the center of the trunk.
- Immediately pour or inject the concentrated (neat) herbicide into the holes.
- Note: This works best in the dry season when the tree is actively seeking moisture and will pull the chemical upward.
2. The "Epsom Salt" Method (Non-Toxic)
If you prefer not to use heavy herbicides, you can use Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) or rock salt to dehydrate the tree from the inside out.
- Process: Drill several deep holes (10+ inches) into the trunk or the stump if it's already been cut. Fill these holes completely with Epsom salt and a small amount of water to create a slurry.
- Caveat: Some coconut varieties are naturally salt-tolerant. This method is slower and may take 6–12 months to completely starve the root system.
3. The "Hing" (Asafoetida) Method
In many tropical regions, a traditional DIY method involves using
Asafoetida (a pungent spice resin).
- Process: Drill a hole into the heart of the trunk and stuff it with a large amount of Asafoetida (Hing).
- Why it works: It acts as a biological irritant and can introduce rot into the core of the palm, eventually killing it.
4. Continuous Defoliation
A coconut tree has only one growing point (the "heart" or bud at the top). If you can safely reach the top:
- Process: Cut off all green fronds and continue to cut any new growth that appears.
- Why it works: Without leaves to photosynthesize, the tree cannot produce energy. Once the central "heart" is destroyed or dies from lack of energy, the tree cannot recover.
