Not only for Matara he is the only minister in 1994 Cabinet where he took right steps to develop Telecommunicaiton with the establishment of TRC with its head renown intellect Prof Rohan Samarajeewa. Within 5 years Telephone land lines were freely available with the entrance of two private firms and that created competition to Telecom. (Do you believe that one has to go behind local politician to get a Telephone in 1994 and prior). Telecommunication was one area UNP did not liberalized fully though mobile phones were introduced , but that was also done in very limited discriminatory manner. Eg Allocation of Band with
As minister of Urban Development he took very unpopular steps to widen roads and remove illegal structures including some buddhist shrines.
He was instrumental in bringing MR to power when CBK did not want to give it . He with the help of other parties named MR as president and late Anura B as PM and went to the election and won the election by mere 50.2% for MR , but what happened after election is recent history and hope we remember them
As a short stint he was also FM and according to Ministry Official who worked with him as well as late Mr. Laxman Kadirgarmar and few others who followed him , he did it best and had even asked some things that he did as minister to take forward , on the day just before MR sacked him !!
He had opted LSE to do fashion design and started his own brand in UK and also in SL.I think he would have done better as fashion designer
He had his faults , but a person who had given his best to Sri Lanka. I wish him speedy recovery.
