I am not a doctor, but a person who failed to enter Medical College instead did a degree in Science. I do not have jealousy over the profession and I am proud of what I do. So first we should put away the personal jealousies we might harbour.
Why do doctor's need this ? To educate their children . Is it a bad thing to ask for best education. I do not think so.
Next is why are they asking some preference, for one they are in a transferable service like SLAS or Foreign Service (majority of these services consist of persons who could not secure a place in Medical College).
As far as I know there is a secular governing such transferable services and they use that to obtain best schools. Have you ever seen a person in diplomatic service(foreign service) not getting a popular school. In any event their salaries when they work abroad are very high and they could afford even the expensive international schools. So, do the doctors who use their profession as a business and for them there is no need for popular schools.
The plight of the most doctors are comparatively poor. If they do not engage in private practice their salary is not enough to maintain a car. There are significant portion of doctors who do not engage in private practice for policy. So, what is their plight.
When we are sick we need the best attention. If not we may suffer damage to us , even death. So what is wrong in they are given some preference. Their profession cannot be compared with any other profession. We know all the politicians , even from outside the colombo district always get schools in Colombo. Most of them are smarter than doctors ?
If not pay them a salary that is on par with other countries. If not most of them may migrate to other countries as salaries in these countries are very high.
Finally do not always say free education made the Doctors. We all had access to free education. If you could not or did not use it it not the fault of the Doctors.
Please note that the Medicine is not the most expensive university degree offered under the Free Education. (if one wants costing please meet the UGC for that).
This is not a justification of strike in health sector which is considered essential and critical for a country by ILO and even they recommend some kind of restrictions on right to engage in strike in work for medical profession. So I vehemently condemn such activities , while recognizing that some solution is needed for their agitation.
