UPDATE [8:35pm]: Malaysian authorities hold press conference, but stonewall most media questions. Questions that they dodged include:

    1) Was there a security lapse? Who is Malaysia Airlines' insurer?
    2) What possibilities and angles are you looking at?
    3) Did the passengers traveling on stolen passports look like they were German or Italian?

    They also confirmed that:

    1) Search radius increased from 20 nautical miles to 50 nautical miles
    2) Countries assisting in the search include: Vietnam, China, Singapore, United States, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines.
    3) Australia sending support as well.
    4) Air search to take place between 7am and 7pm. Naval search goes on round the clock.
    5) Malaysia also searching in the Straits of Malacca due to reports that MH370 turned back.
    6) No signal from the plane's Emergency Locator Transmittor (ELT).
    7) Altogether, 34 aircraft and 40 ships involved in search for MH370.

There is a video on mirror.co.uk showing a Chinese family successfully ringing the mobile of a missing passenger. The call connects, but no one answers. The revelation raises yet more questions about what has happened to flight MH370.

Malaysia Airlines: What we know about Flight MH370

    _73463165_021462190-1.jpg

A man looks out from a viewing gallery as a Malaysia Airlines aircraft sits on the tarmac at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Sunday
Mystery shrouds the fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which has disappeared with 239 passengers and crew en route to Beijing.
Family and friends of those on board continue to be tormented by the uncertainty, as searches are carried out at sea and officials struggle to offer an explanation for the disappearance.

    Who was on board?
    _73463786_021462726-1.jpg

Muhammad Razahan Zamani (bottom right), 24, and his wife Norli Akmar Hamid, 33, were on their honeymoon on the missing flight. The phone is being held by his stepsister, Arni Marlina
There were 227 passengers, including 153 Chinese and 38 Malaysians, according to the manifest. Two were children. All 12 crew members were Malaysian.
Two passengers were travelling on fraudulent passports (believed stolen earlier from an Italian and an Austrian), en route to Europe.
Malaysia plane: Who were the passengers?
    _66239292_line2.gif

When was the last contact made? Flight MH370 departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 00:41 on Saturday (16:41 GMT Friday), and was due to arrive in Beijing at 06:30. Air traffic controllers lost contact at 01:30.
At a time as yet undisclosed, a relative reportedly managed to call one of the passengers, who was carrying a Singapore phone. Malaysia Airlines has repeatedly tried to call the same number but no ringtone has been heard.

    Where did the jet disappear?
    _73452720_china_malaysia_plane_464.gif

It was flying over the South China Sea, south of Vietnam's Ca Mau peninsula. The normal route would have taken it over Cambodia and Vietnam before entering Chinese airspace.
No distress signal or message was sent but it is believed the plane attempted to turn back from its scheduled path, perhaps towards Kuala Lumpur Airport.

    _66239292_line2.gif

What area does the search cover?

A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement boat searching off north-east Malaysia
Initially the focus was on waters to the east of Malaysia, in the South China Sea.
But this has now been extended to the Straits of Malacca, along Malaysia's west coast.

What are the theories for a crash?

    _73463788_021448956-1.jpg

A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER taking off from Narita Airport near Tokyo, Japan, last year
Common factors in plane crashes are poor weather, pilot error and airworthiness.
Weather conditions on this flight are said to have been good and the pilot, 53, who had more than 18,000 flying hours behind him, had been employed by the airline since 1981.
Malaysia Airlines has a good safety record and the jet, a Boeing 777-200, is said to be one of the safest because of its modern technology. One of the plane's wingtips was clipped in an incident while taxiing in 2012 but it was repaired and certified as safe by Boeing Airlines.
    _66239292_line2.gif

Could it have been a terrorist attack? The airline says it is not ruling out any theory while officials in the US, which is sending FBI investigators, say there is no evidence of such an attack yet.
The presence of two passengers with stolen passports is a breach of security but could relate to illegal migration.
When an Air India plane crashed in Mangalore in 2010 en route from Dubai, with the loss of 158 lives, as many 10 fraudulent passports were recovered.

Can a modern jet just vanish without trace?
    _73461742_73460045.jpg

Simon Clemison reports on how planes can just vanish from radar

An Air France jet flying from Brazil to France vanished into the Atlantic Ocean on 1 June 2009, with the loss of all 228 people on board.
Debris was spotted the following day but it took nearly two years to locate the flight recorders and remains of the fuselage, deep on the ocean floor.
The waters off Vietnam and in the Malacca straits are much shallower.
Flight recorders, or "black boxes" as they are often known, emit ultrasonic signals that can be detected underwater. Under good conditions, the signals can be detected from several hundred miles away.

Missing Malaysia Airlines plane: Pilot contacted MH370 just before it went missing

SEPANG: A pilot said he established contact with Malaysia Airlines plane MH370 moments before it went missing.
The Boeing 777 captain, who asked to not be named, said he was flying 30 minutes ahead of the missing aircraft, and was asked to use his plane's emergency frequency to contact MH370 by Vietnamese air traffic control officials who wanted to establish its location.
The pilot, whose plane was bound for Narita, Japan, told Malaysia's New Sunday Times: "We managed to establish contact with MH370 just after 1.30am and asked them if they have transferred into Vietnamese airspace.
"The voice on the other side could have been either Captain Zaharie or Fariq, but I was sure it was the co-pilot," he told the newspaper.

Australia to send military aircraft to join search of missing Malaysian Airlines flight

Australian air force will send two P-3C aircraft to join the multinational search for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, the local AAP news service said Sunday.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott said his country would like to assist the search during a phone talk with his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak Sunday and the latter accepted the offer, said the report.
The first RAAF P-3C long-range maritime surveillance aircraft would leave for the search from Australia's northern city of Darwin Sunday night.
A Boeing 777-200 aircraft operated by Malaysia Airlines left Kuala Lumpur International Airport for Beijing at 12:41 am on Saturday.
However, the plane lost its contact with air traffic controllers, along with its radar signal, when it was flying over Ho Chi Minh City air traffic control area in Vietnam.
The aircraft was carrying 12 Malaysian flight crew members and 227 passengers from 14 countries, including 154 from China and six from Australia.
Rescue teams from China, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam are making all-out efforts to locate the plane, but so far without success.

On June 1, 2009, Air France Flight 447 was en route from Rio De Janeiro to Paris when communications ended suddenly from the Airbus A330, another state-of-the-art aircraft.
It took four searches over the course of nearly two years to locate the bulk of flight 447's wreckage and the majority of the 228 bodies in a mountain range deep under the ocean. It took even longer to find the cause of the disaster.
