De Villiers was born in a South African family of Afrikaans heritage, the son of Dr. Abraham Benjamin de Villiers, a doctor of medical sciences. He attended Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Afrikaans High School for Boys), a public school in Pretoria. Among his schoolmates were future international cricketers Jacques Rudolph, Heino Kuhn and Francois du Plessis. As a child, de Villiers wanted to be a doctor like his father, and later regretted that he had not had the opportunity to study medicine.[4]
