Colombo-Ratnapura expressway work to begin soon

The proposed 71.8 km Colombo-Ratnapura expressway would be constructed through the least populated areas and compensation paid for the lands and properties to be acquired, Ports, Highways and Shipping Project Minister Nirmala Kotalawala said yesterday.
He told The Island that the government had decided to aquire state and private lands for the expressway within one and a half months to expedite its construction.
The Project Minister said the government had decided to expedite the project therefore the construction work of the expressway would start within this year and would be completed by 2019.
The new expressway from Colombo to Pelmadulla via Ratnapura will start from Kahatuduwa interchange of the Southern expressway.
It will pass through Horana, Gelanigama, Handapangoda, Ingiriya, Munasinhapura, Kiriella, Otuwagala, Eheliyagoda, Kithulpe, Dodampe, Kosgoda, Kuruwita and Pelmadulla via Ratnapura.
Once completed, the motorists will be able to travel from Colombo to Ratnapura within 45 minutes and to Pelmadulla within an hour.
The expressway will also enable motorists entering the Southern Expressway to reach Kaduwela, Galle or Matara direct through the Kahatuduwa interchange.
Motorists will have an opportunity to travel from the South to the North or North to the South bypassing Colombo city.
