We did not fall to this position suddenly.

To start with, we never actually had dollars for the last few decades or so.
What ever dollars we had were raised from loans that were borrowed from countries and commerical lending agencies.

So all the subsidized low cost petrol, diesel, medicines, food and all other items were imported through loans. The free education, free healthcare came from loans. Our exports were megre and was not enough to fund all our economic activities, so we had to keep on burrowing. 80%. Of govt income went for paying salaries of govt servants, and not for anything meaningful. So everything had to be funded by loans, loans and more loans. We never really had dollars. All our dollars belonged to our creditors.

None of these loans were used to increase our exports or create industries so that in future we could get out of debt. They were just used for vanity projects that heaped our politicians with commissions or for buying day to day items from other countries. Now that we have defaulted, no one will give us loans. So we have no money to pay for even the most bare essential items.
