South America's largest river may be the Amazon, but Brazil's Tietê river might be the most polluted. The river flows over 700 miles through São Paulo, Brazil's most populous, economically efficient, and wealthy state. And the Tietê certainly contributed to that success. The river served as a highway for industrial growth from the 1940's onward, providing shipping, hydroelectricity, and irrigation for agriculture. A stretch of the Tietê gave life to Brazil's largest city, São Paulo, providing fresh water for the over 11 million people that live in São Paulo proper.

But like so many other rivers exposed to extreme growth and population, the Tietê eventually fell victim to terrible pollution. Toxic foam forms on the river's surface during dry months when the concentration of chemicals grows relative to water levels. As late as 1990 nearly all of São Paulo's sewage flowed into the river untreated, causing the river to become biologically dead for miles. In fact, the river's dire condition comes almost exclusively from pollution related to untreated sewage. Brazilian law mandated that some of the 40,000 factories along the riverbanks dump their waste into the sewer system, but a total lack of sewage treatment infrastructure meant that all of that waste flowed into the Tietê raw.

By 1992 public outrage over the cleanliness of the Tietê grew so vocal that over a million signatures were organized into a petition to the government for change. As a result, the government formed the Tietê Project in 1991. The project aims to conquer the river's pollution problems by improving sewage treatment infrastructure at major pollution sites. And while major headway has been made to improve water quality, some four million people in São Paulo still lack even basic sewage, signaling a pollution free Tietê may still be years away.

The Pasig River cuts directly through the heart of Manila for more than 15 miles, splitting the Philippine capital in two. Before World War II ornate residences along the riverside harbored Manila's elite, but at the war's conclusion, the wealthy split for the suburbs, leaving the waterway to the neglect of industry and population boom. Thousands flooded Manila seeking gainful employment. Slums and shanty towns sprouted along the Pasig's banks, resulting in an influx of untreated sewage and household waste into the river. Factories and other industrial hubs were erected to meet labor demands, but went largely unregulated, releasing toxic chemicals into the river.

First came the smell, then ferry service declined, people stopped washing their laundry in the river's waters, and eventually the Pasig was declared biologically dead--the river became so polluted that it could no longer sustain life of any kind. The abuse continued for nearly 50 years until environmental activists and government officials finally started to take notice. In 1999, the government went a step further and created the Pasig River Rehabilitative Commission, aiming for a river clean enough to sustain life by 2014. Despite cleaning efforts over the past 20 years, the Pasig River remains biologically dead.

ndonesia's largest city, Jakarta, is home to over 10 million people and some of the most polluted waterways in the world. Over a four year period from 2007-2011, Jakarta's population increased by nearly three million from 7.5 million to 10.2 million. With more Indonesians pushing towards urbanization, the city's network of 13 rivers became a dumping ground for household garbage and waste. Thanks to the influx of garbage and untreated sewage, the Jakarta Environmental Management Agency reported that 71 percentof Jakarta's river water was "heavily polluted," and that there was, "no clean water in Jakarta's rivers."

In 2007, the Citarum River, which supplies some 80 percent of water to Jakarta, came under international scrutiny after being dubbed, "the world's most polluted river." Locals have a rather notorious reputation for using waterways like the Citarum as rubbish heaps. Mounds of garbage bob along the waterline and stick to the banks until they form teetering refuse mountains. There's so much junk in Jakarta's rivers that a clean up calls for an arsenal of backhoes. After Jakarta's pollution problems came to light, support for clean-up flowed into the capital via the Asian Development Bank, which provided $500 million in funding for a dedicated sponging of the network of rivers.

Pollution is often exacerbated by the decrepit network of levees and dams used to stem recurring flooding issues in the capital. An estimated 40 percent of Jakarta's land lies below sea level, so heavy rains and high tides often overburden the infrastructure causing massive flooding. Trash and other waste then accumulates at bridges and other manmade structures, putting Jakarta's pollution problem on full display.

America's most important waterway winds 2,350 miles along or through 10 states, from Minnesota to Louisiana and into the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way the river accumulates drainage from 31 states and two Canadian provinces before flushing sediment into the Gulf to form the Mississippi River Delta.

The Mississippi's location along key industrial and agricultural hubs also make it an vital shipping and transportation conduit for most of America. Ninety-two percent of the nation's agricultural exports and 78 percent of world's feed grain and soybean exports are located along the Mississippi, according to the National Park Service.

But with tremendous importance comes equally exceptional abuse. A report released by the advocacy group Environment Missouri found that 12.7 million pounds of toxic chemicals were released into the Mississippi during a year long stretch. Most of those chemicals come from fertilizers and other nutrient rich chemicals used to stimulate the growth of crops along the river. When coupled with sewage run off, the mass of polluted water converges at the head of the Gulf of Mexico to one of the largest "dead zones" -- an area completely devoid of life -- in the world.

The Gulf of Mexico dead zone occurs when the chemically saturated waters of the Mississippi mix with the salty Gulf, igniting massive algae blooms that eventually decompose and consume the oxygen in the water, causing all life to die in a process known as hypoxia. Every year the Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone varies in size, but remains one of the largest such "dead zones" in the world. In 2002 the Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone reached its largest known size of more than 8,400 square miles, roughly the size of New Jersey, but in 2012 measured just 2,889 miles, slightly larger than Delaware.

The Mississippi's woes extend further than the dead zone. The river is prone to a disproportionate share of oil spills, including the 2010 BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico that wreaked havoc on the Mississippi River Delta, spewing over 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf, before eventually finding its way to the mouth of the Mississippi.

China's Jian River hardly challenges the Yangtze or Yellow rivers in size or pollution concerns, but fairly recent events along its banks serve as a microcosm for China's over-arching pollution plague. On a cold December morning, residents of Luoyang in northern China awoke to the sight of the Jian flowing a Biblical red. Panic ensued as residents and government officials scrambled to find the source of the river's chameleonic water. Within two days officials had tracked down the culprits: workers at an illegal workshop had dumped red dye into the network of sewers connected to the river.

According to CNN, tests on the river by the local Environmental Protection Bureau showed no traces of toxic chemicals, but the incident highlighted major concerns about pollution in China. Environmental pollution has largely been ignored during three decades of rapid industrial and economic ascent in China. Though the country has a somewhat notorious reputation for censoring information to maintain a clean image, a report issued earlier this year by the state-run Ministry of Environmental Protection found that 57.3 percent of the groundwater in 193 cities was rated as "bad" or "extremely bad" and 30 percent of the China's rivers were "polluted" or "seriously polluted."

Major public kickback from pollution has incited unrest in the country's Politburo. As a result, a controversial new policy to levy the death penalty upon those found guilty of polluting was unveiled earlier this month.

The Ganga is the second largest river in terms of water flow, producing the world's largest delta, the Ganges Delta, in the Bay of Bengal. Providing fresh water to some 40 percent of the Indian population is just one role the Ganges plays in Indian life. The river's flow irrigates crops and plays host to the largest religious gathering in the world. Once every 12 years, 100 million Hindus take a pilgrimage to Allahabad, India, where the Ganges and Yamuna rivers meet, and immerse themselves in the water hoping to cleanse their sins. Because the Ganges is worshipped for its divine connection to the Hindu gods, many leave offerings to float along the river's surface, including the dead, hoping to speed along the cycle of the after-life.

Yet, despite its indispensable role in sustaining Indian life, the Ganga is the recipient of some of the worst abuse on the planet. Close to a billion gallons of raw sewage gushes into the Ganges each day, much more than the existing sewage treatment facilities can handle, turning the river into little more than a slow-flowing sewer. Though untreated human waste is the single largest contributor of pollution to the Ganges, industrial waste from leather, paper, sugar, and brass factories along the river banks contributes to some 20 percent of the toxic flow of the Ganges. And though the government banned the practice of dumping the dead into the Ganges over a decade ago, thousands still slip under the cloak of darkness to set their loved ones afloat. The bodies are then left to bloat and decompose into the river bed, only exacerbating the pollution problem. Pollution spikes during pilgrimages have also come under recent scrutiny. A study conducted during the latest edition of Kumbh Mela found that Biochemical Oxygen Demand Levels - used to measure organic pollution in water - had risen three points, from 4.4 mg/liter to 7.4mg/liter, after the first day of bathing in the Ganges. According to the BBC, safe levels should not exceed 2 mg/liter.

A host of efforts to clean up the Ganges have been largely unsuccessful, but a $1.5 billion project funded largely by the World Bank hopes to build the necessary infrastructure to make a dent in the pollution epidemic.
