Vietnam was a French colony. After the WWII, French tried to continue their control over Vietnam, but had to give the independence due to the 1954 Geneva Accords and massive resistance from the Vietnamese people. When French left the country, the land was divided as North Vietnam and South Vietnam.
North Vietnam was administrated by Ho Chih Minh as a Communist state, while South Vietnam was under Ngo Dinh Diem's control.
During the cold war, the USA feared the influence of Communism promoted by the Soviet Union. They also believed that if one country chose the Communism, the neighbouring countries would be also prefer Communism (The Domino Effect).
USA favors South Vietnam and supported them. But the connection was severered due to an incident happened in 1963, where the Buddhist monks self-immolated themselves during a protest and Ngo Diem didn't investigate the issue. At that time John F. Kennedy served as the President of USA and he decided to overthrow the Ngo Diem's government with the aid of CIA. After 3 weeks from the success of overthrow plan, JFK was assassinated.
Lyndon B. Johnson was elected as the new president of USA. During his tenure, there was an allegation that the Vietnam troops attacked on US Naval ships (during the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident). Lyndon B. Johnson perceived this as a threat. He asked the Congress for the approval to declare the war and it was confirmed. As a result in 1965, USA sent their troops to Vietnam and started the war.
