    UN temporarily closed

The UN office in Colombo has been temporarily closed and the UN staff has been advised to work from home tomorrow as a result of the tense situation which developed outside the UN office today, UN sources told Daily Mirror online.

UN sources said that instructions to work from home was issued to the UN staff today after the group of protestors led by Minister Wimal Weerawansa who gathered outside the UN office laid siege to the building and prevented the UN staff from leaving the premises.

However there was no indication for how long the UN staff would stay away from their office although it is expected that a decision would be taken following a review of the latest developments.

Meanwhile when contacted, officials at the UN Headquarters in New York said that New York was closely monitoring the situation in Colombo and would take the matter up with the Sri Lankan government.

“We are fully aware of what is happening in Colombo and are closely monitoring the situation. We will raise the matter with the necessary people,” the official said refusing to comment further.

Meanwhile UN Associate spokesman Farhan Haq, speaking to reporters in New York a short while ago said that the UN had registered its strong objections with the Sri Lankan government over the protest organised by Minister Wimal Weerawansa outside the UN office which prevented UN staff from entering and leaving the premises.

UN Panel to meet this month

The expert panel appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to advice him on Sri Lanka will meet as scheduled later this month although an exact date is yet to be finalized, the Chairman of the panel told Daily Mirror online this evening.

Chairman of the Panel Marsuki Darusman when contacted by Daily Mirror online this evening said that the Panel was expected to meet in the third week of this month to begin its work.

When questioned about today’s protest where Darusman and his two colleagues were termed as ‘three idiots’ by Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s supporters during the protest in Colombo today, Darusman said, “I would not like to comment about that at the moment. Let’s see how things proceed.”

UN speaks out against protests trapping staff inside Colombo office

The United Nations has registered its strong objections to protests organized outside its offices in Colombo today by a Sri Lankan cabinet minister that prevented the world body’s staff and visitors from entering or leaving the premises.

“While respecting the right of citizens to demonstrate peacefully, preventing access to UN offices hinders the vital work being carried out by the United Nations each day to help the people of Sri Lanka,” UN spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters in New York.

“The Government has provided assurances for the safety and security of our staff and for their full access to their offices,” he added. “We will be closely monitoring developments and trust these commitments will be honoured.”

Hundreds of people took part in the protests, which were reportedly led by Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa and which called for an end to the UN advisory panel set up last month by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Mr. Ban appointed a panel of experts to advise him on accountability issues relating to alleged violations of international human rights and humanitarian law during the final stages of the conflict that ended last year between the Government and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The three-member panel – comprising Marzuki Darusman of Indonesia, Yasmin Sooka of South Africa and Steven Ratner of the United States – is expected to wrap up its responsibilities within four months of starting work.
