I haven't watched the teledrama in full but have read the book. It bagged the "Swarna Pushthaka" award. It might not be available over the shelf, but I ordered it from K books.

Here's the story line - Due thanks to a review published in the CDN....

Babilina and her spouse, Udenis are not a happy couple owing to the repentance that they are childless. Both attempt to have a baby by performing all possible rituals, viz. Shanthikarma.Still their efforts do not respond positively.
Meanwhile they come to know about Yakkutigala Thera a priest vested with miraculous powers for healing. Thera is adorned with a slough of respect by villagers. Yakkutigala Thera tries his hands at Babilina’s case at a request made by the chief monk of the temple.

Thereafter, Babilina has to come to the Temple everyday accompanied with her husband. Sometimes Udenis cannot come on some days. Babilina goes there with her friend Emiliya. Allured by his great personality Babilina harbours queer feelings about Yakkutigala Thera.
As a result of the untiring attempts Babilina conceives a baby. The whole family is rented with happy feelings on hearing the news that Babilina is expecting. Babilina goes to her mother where his brother Karolis also lives.
Karolis knows his onions as a practitioner of indigenous medicine. He later falls into a maturing love with Emilina, the friend of Babilina who went to Babilina’s ancestral home to help her.

Babilina begets a son. The family is full of joy. Shattering the bloom of happiness Babilana’s marriage life is wrecked with the rumours and the misconception that the child resembles Yakkutigala Thera.
Another hearsay goes on hovering saying the child is a little devil. Udenis, indifferent over the plight of his wife and child was compelled by his mother to end all the affairs he had with Babilina and her family. As she could not bear this insult and frustration Babilina takes poison and dies. Vibuthirathna, the son of Babilina is looked after by Emilina as her son thereafter.

Udenis enters into a new marriage with Kamalawathi who gives him two children, namely Sumathipala and Maduwathi.
Emiliya who becomes the surrogate mother to Vibuthirathna marries Karolis. Their nuptial was immensely contributed by the love both of them have for Vibuthirathna.

Vibuthirathna cuts himself a boy with extraordinary calibre in comparison with other children of his age. With his sharp memory, intelligence. Emiliya begets two daughters called Paba and Badhri. Though Vibuthirathna excelled in his studies he stops schooling as he cannot tolerate the harassing of his classmates. But engages in indigenous medicine and poetry. Paba becomes a teacher.
Badhri enters into the Faculty of Medicine and later marries a boy called Alfred who values Westernish virtues. Soon after getting married to that man Badri she left the country with her husband to live in a foreign land. Sumathipla, the son of Udenis in his second marriage becomes a thug.
Amarathunga, a teacher came to the village develops an interest over Paba. He was a man who is greatly influenced by left wing politics which was political fashion of the era. The feelings he coddles within him for Paba goes into oblivion with Amaratunga’s entry into active politics. He organizes meetings throughout the area to propagate his political insight.

Once Amarathunga is holding a meeting Sumathipala breaks into it with the purpose of sabotaging the proceeding. The clash between Amarathunga and Sumathipala reaches its boiling point when Sumathipala points his gun towards Amarathunga. Paba seeing what is going to happen jumps between the two.
To rescue Paba Vibuthirathna shields her. Terrified by the way Vibuthirathna jumps to cover Paba Sumathipala triggers the gun.
But it is not Vibuthirathna but Udenis the father of both Sumathipla and Vibuthirathna is shot to death as he comes between the two at the very minute Sumathipla triggers. Sumathipla is imprisoned for the murder.

Vibuthirathna goes to a monastery to continue the rest of his life as a recluse. Paba, still unmarried, waits for Vibuthirathna expecting that he will come to her in time to come.
