LETS SUE SWARNAVAHINI !
Today on Swarnavahini there was this incident aired under "Dawase waradda" segment. They go and film a person getting fined and showing his face to the country against his strong objection to filming him. This is a clear violation of many laws, acts and media ethics.
1) You cannot publicize someone's identity without their permission.
2) You cannot record and publicize a conversation between two parties without either parties approval or unless that is already available in the public domain.
3) You have all the right to protect your privacy.
4) Which includes but not limited to Filming, photographing and publishing the identity.
5) Continuing to film/photograph someone against their will and strong objection.
6) Where have the media person taken approval to record these minor errors on public in the streets? If no approval this is against the law and ethics of the country.
7) How can the Traffic Police let media personnel accompany them when they are fining people? Did police invited them?
8) Is this a drama or a film production for police department that they fancy to feature their faces?
We are in a country where rogues defraud billions, companies and banks rips & cheat customers every second, public officials and politicians ruining the country every second, environment is destroyed by illegal logging, massive commercial cultivation, illegal land grabbing by politicians, waterfalls and eco systems destroyed due to politician's mini hydro projects where they earn minimum 100mn a year by exploiting public's natural resources causing huge ecological destruction, a country where corruption is at its height, a country where severe CKD is killing thousands of people every year and still no proper solution is found, a country where banned agrochemicals are sold in the open market, a country where cancer medications worth billions are robbed and robbers profited and continue to profit, a country where kidney racket was forgotten in days, a country where there is no legislation for freedom for information, a country where there are acts like Senaka Bibile but not functioning, a country where politicians still don't have a code of conduct, a country where politicians can refuse to declare their assets against the law and still do politics without any consequence and further thrive stealing public, a country where underworld gangs and serious drug and smuggling rackets takes place where no media is focusing enough on them or try and expose those who are involved, a country where more than a million is serving in middle east as domestic aids and receives several dead bodies a month and no one notices or talk about how to deal with it or expose the manpower agencies that are blacklisted / should be blacklisted, a country where a court case takes a decade to finish and often by the time the case is over at least one party is dead or has given up hopes of receiving any justice at all, a country where police violates all the laws and torture people at police custody and in public receives no punishment, disregard court rulings to arrest policemen for months and neither court itself nor the government or any other party take an action for the negligence and inaction of police to abide by the court order such as the Ambilipitiya case.......
This list can go on and on forever.
It's utterly disappointing we as public having to face this hypocritical treatment from media and other institutions that is there to do just to people. Safeguard us and protect our rights. protects our right to privacy at least when we have not committed a crime.
I think this person will take this up and sue Swarnavahini at the courts. If you know this person by any chance, do let us know his contact details or any mean to contact him (Inbox). If he requires any assistance to do that we as CONSUMER RIGHTS MOVEMENT OF SRI LANKA is more than glad to help him on this cause.
Please share this widely as possible. Post this on the wall of every media personnel you know of. United let's make a voice against hypocrisy of media and remind them what basic media ethics are. Most of all what is "Privacy" of an individual and basic human rights are.
