Twenty one people have died in a road accident that occurred at Kosgoda near Induruwa in Galle District this morning at about 6.45 a.m.. 20 people died on the spot and another died after being admitted to Balapitiya Hospital.
About 25 people have been admitted to Balapitiya Hospital with severe injures and about 20 more have been treated for minor injuries.
A container-lorry transporting beer had been driven on to a passenger bus traveling from Yakkalamulla to Colombo, toppling the bus. The passengers had been trapped in the bus when the container caught fire.
19 bodies brought to Karapitiya Hospital in Galle were burnt beyond recognition say hospital sources. DNA tests are to be conducted on the bodies to find out identities. Among the dead are 8 females, 9 males and 2 children.
The cause for the accident could be the negligence of the lorry driver or he would have been dozing say the police. A special police team has been designated for the investigation.
