The only thing I look is whether it's Star Alliance and the Airline itself... Most of the time I choose SQ. I don't want to lose my KrisFlyer privileges. Only a couple of months ago I took long haul flights to Mexico (via USA) these were Dreamliners & Houston/Mex and Mex/SFO both 737MAX.
Nothing is foolproof.
