who says that? see a similarly hacked Swift after 7/8 years to do a fair comparison. I would say second gen Swift held up pretty well though. Too early to judge new one since it's still new.

It's obvious that even if both engines were similarly treated (hacked or meticulously maintained) The three-pot turbocharged 1000CC engine won't hold up as good as a 4-pot NA 1500CC engine in a similar time period.

but for the prospective buyer in 2019 reliability is not a reason to pay the same amount of a Swift RS/Vitz for a 7-year-old Allion with sketchy maintenance records - since obviously the newer Swift would have the upper hand when it comes to reliability

It depends on the requirements and expectations of the buyer isn't it? For a guy who needs a sedan for a reason don't buy a hatch no matter how new or feature rich it is. Only similarity of these two cars is the price which could be a deciding factor in a country like us. I accept that. I have seen people recommending new Civic 1000cc to a guy looking for a 98/99 Prado who prefers weekend excursions.
