i know it's hard to bye to windows...,bt machan just try ubuntu...i can b sure ur try will b worth..uba samahara wita danna eththe parana version ekak ..aluth version ekak dapan ...patta ban..( ubuntu release a new version in every 6 months..the latest stable version is 8.o4 - hardy heron) mama nan dala thiyenne 7.10 eka .....aluth ekata upgrade karanna welawak hambune ne......umba aluth eka dala balapan.....

Don't get your partitions ruined (there is a good chance for this to happen since it seems you are a newbie to linux)... Install using wubi... it's so easy and safe...

i have installed but still i'm struggling to configure and install my adsl modem in it..

Ubuntu is very cool.. and powerful.. Try Using Hardy Heron it comes with Wubi easy to install inside windows (ntfs) withouth changing partitions mannualy..

uba kalinma wede karagena hinda menna me tika den balapan...
infor 4 u......

machan swap partition eka anivarya ne...swap ekak hadanawanam tikak fast weda karaganda puluwan..,swap ekak hadaddi hadanne ram eke memory size 1 2gune ena widihata,.,,,,ethakota thamai swap eken hodatama weda ganda puluwan wenne..Ex..if u hav 512 MB ram then it's good if u can make 1024 MB swap...and if you have enough ram(near 2GB) u don't need to make a swap..,.

anyway after installing ubuntu u better install the following

B4 installing u have to enable all the repositories...then u can proceed with this

10 things to do after installing ubuntu

1)install wine 4 sure(which is use to run *.exe files in ubuntu)


2)install VLC (a media player)enter the command in the terminal


3)make sure to install compiz (which will enable the advance desktop effects..),meka anivaryayenma dapan..it's better u install this in synepetic coz,u'll need some dependancy pakges
goto synepatic package manager and serch 4 compiz, and tik the compiz option and click install

4)inkscape 4 image editing although there is GIMP


5)install myth tv 4 watch tv

6)Install flash player,..i recommand not to install in terminal..,..goto synapatic and serch 4 flash and tick every option which include flash and firefox..,,(u can install flash by going to adobe site and downloading the installation file..i thnk it's abt 3MB)

7)install real player by downoading the installation file frm the real web site...

8) if u want to play windows games in ubuntu you'll have to install cedega engine,,although u can play some games through wine bt not the big games like carbon ost wanted...etc

9)"downloader for X" for a download manager....

10)go and register in the ubuntu forum...

and also if u wanna learn more about this and linux based o/s,then goto this thread and download every single magazine..
