No brother you're wrong. Employers have a great recognition towards BCS. If you say they don't know then they must be not in the IT trade.
Yes it is a Professional qualification and not an Academic qualification. But you'll be surprised that professional qualification outweigh academic qualification and employers prefer people with professional qualification over academics.
This is an email I got from the BCS Sri Lanka section:
So if you want to do any masters program in IT in Sri Lanka, with BCS you can start one. Also you comment is totally wrong. who gave you this idea? All UK universities accept BCS as a Higher Education Qualification, and you can apply for any course with the right credentials.
The real fact is that BCS is the governing body for IT courses in UK universities and all universities try to make their courses meet the BCS standards. After starting my MSc here in UK, i've heard all my lecturers tell this at one time or the other. So i don't see point you said above is true.
And oh, it was the Sri Lankan Uni's that had a problem with BCS and not the UK Uni's.

IT courses in UK universities and all universities try to make their courses meet the BCS standards

....

Is MIS difficult? cz this time i also do. can we do without going classes.
I have the study materials but this lectures are boring. so i was thinking about to do without going classes
Well. I went to an interview in Sri Lanka as a PHP developer(internship) and they told they only take Bsc Holders. And for your information I contacted Norweigian(University of Stavanger), Germany and Australian University. But they told me I must hold Bsc degree to do Msc. It is true you can apply Sri Lankan Universities for Msc other than that it is hopeless.![]()
This is not entirely true...
Cuz the degree which I'm following, once I finish my degree BCS offer us to take the BCS membership without any exams or anything :S :S.... So what I'm saying is there are some degrees which are recognized higher than BCS![]()
BCS is also a good degree equivalent program. but when you do a four year full time degree it will be the best for your future(if you have time and money)![]()
....
you can believe me or not, but you'll understand one day![]()

BCS accredits over 1,500 University courses in the UK. If you are unsure whether your degree is one of these please use our online accredited course search facility to check.
To become a Professional Member (MBCS), you will typically have 5 or more years of IT work experience. Relevant qualifications, such as a computing-related degree, reduce this requirement to 2 or 3 years.
BCS accredited degree with less than 2 years IT experience
From the answers you have provided we think you may be eligible to apply for the grade Member (MBCS)
However if your degree is not an honours degree you should apply for the grade Associate (AMBCS)

thanks for the advice.MIS is not that difficult. But i would recommend going to classes cos this the final step you know and you're spending a lot for one exam, just go with it. And you will have to do some work on your own too.
thanks for the advice.
but these subject are really boring.. and so much of explanations..
machan gunemalli how do you compare BCS Professional Graduate Diploma with the BSc in Management Information Systems.since BCS only got the modules related to IT,but this BSc in MIS got many modules on management too.i know BCS cost less money and less time.what is your opinion on this?what should be the best?Does the completion of BCS PGD allow us to follow stuff like MBA's othe than IT MSC's in sri lanka or out of sri lanka?
Machan,
everything depends on what area you want to go for. The thing i like about BCS is that you're able to customise it to your needs. Though BCS is been regarded as a general IT qualification with a focus on software development I managed to tweak it to be more aligned with networking and web. So it enabled me to easily go for a MSc. in Networking.
That being said, if you really wanna focus on MIS then go for the BSc. in MIS course you've shown. The subjects below are covered by BCS and the rest are not.
I'm not sure what's being covered from Information Systems Applications cos it doesn't give much details.
- Database and Information Resource Management
- Project Management
- Management of Information Systems
- Management Support Systems
- Information System Development and Implementation
These are not covered in BCS or have different names or covered as a part of a module. Best thing you can do get the full curriculum details and compare it against BCS.
Rmember this, BCS is more towards a generic IT qualification which acts as a launchpad for you to progress in a career you choose. whereas the above course only focuses you in the MIS direction and you will have a limited field of entry.
- Accounting
- Business Policy
- Marketing Management
- Management of e-Commerce Strategy and Operations
- Management of Organizations
So i would advice you to think where you want to end up in 5 years time, what type of career you want and see if this course fits bill and would actually help you to go there.
For you final question, yes yuou can follow MBA's after PGD, but remember, to do a MBA you need to have at least 3-5 years of experience in that particular field. There are already 3/4 MBA holders that i know of who gone from the BCS path but they have ~5years of experience in them.
Hope this helps you.
Regards,
Gayan
