she is really talented singer. I have seen few previous performances shared in either FB or youtube. But I see three problems in what happened in the independence day celebration.

1) the occasion was not for the opera loyalists. it was general public, who has heard the song for long time with a certain way and when they hear it in all different format, irrespective of the song, that will bound get some negative feedback. people have to accept and ready for that when they do these types of act for general public. opera is not the mainstream culture. therefore when someone force it to general public it is bound to get some bad rep. when and opera is done is for closed group who is there to listen to them, they will be thrilled. but same cannot be expected from general public.

2) the song has no direct connection with the event. I do not see the reason for selecting this song. that event was independence day of sri lanka and they sang a song about Buddhism. it would have better if they choose a song about sri lanka or anything else which is common to all. people might think that they choose this song just to make fun of it and to discredit the great song/Buddhism. it may be the real situation behind this huge resistance.

3) each and every song has has a proper tune for it. initially this song was sung with a tune of opera but why do you think it is not popular. if it was not able to catch the traction then that song dies. it might be the same reason that they did another version which is now popular and has become an icon song. these singers should have thought lil bit more when selecting this type of iconic song for this performance.

finally 1) for this event she could have selected a general song 2) the same song would be great in front of opera loyalist. I'm neither a opera loyalist nor understand any deep thing in that. but I'd love to hear the same song in a different place in front of different audience. but no. what they did is wrong for the occasion.
