China racing to build hospitals as virus spreads

China is racing to build more hospitals as the new coronavirus continues to spread.

China's National Health Committee said on Wednesday that the number of confirmed cases in the country rose from the previous tally by 3,887, to reach 24,324.

Sixty-five more people have died from the virus in Hubei, the province at the center of the outbreak, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 490.

A first quickly built hospital dedicated to treating coronavirus patients began operating on Tuesday in Wuhan, the hardest-hit city in Hubei. The facility can admit up to 1,000 people.

A hospital official said it will take a few more days for the hospital to become fully operational.

A second hastily built hospital in Wuhan is scheduled to start operating on Thursday.

Work is also underway in the city to convert 11 facilities into temporary hospitals. The facilities include gymnasiums and conference halls.

At one gymnasium, work to set up beds is almost complete. Officials say the first patients will be accepted as early as Wednesday night.

Chinese media say the temporary hospitals will take in coronavirus patients with mild symptoms.

On Tuesday alone, 3,000 new cases were confirmed in Hubei Province .

Two newborn babies in Wuhan, China, have been infected with the novel coronavirus, according to China's state broadcaster CCTV.

The youngest baby was diagnosed at just 30 hours old. The baby's mother was also infected with the virus, and CCTV suggested that "there may be mother-infant transmission,” where the mother passes the virus on to the baby in utero.

Other possibilities: Without more details, it's impossible to know if the infants were infected in the womb. There are other ways they could have been exposed -- through handling by healthcare workers, mothers coughing, breastfeeding or even in the delivery process.
