The average woman needs to eat about 2,000 calories per day to maintain her weight, and 1,500 calories per day to lose one pound of weight per week. Meanwhile, the average man needs 2,500 calories to maintain, and 2,000 to lose one pound of weight per week.

Because 3,500 calories equals about 1 pound (0.45 kilogram) of fat, it's estimated that you need to burn about 3,500 calories to lose 1 pound.

Yes of course Calories play an important part. That's why they say you are what you eat.
However, it is not only the calories. Genetics plays a role too. The FTO gene is one of the several associated with obesity. If both your parents are obese, then there's an elevated likelihood that you might be too.
OTOH there are people who eat anything, yet remain slim.
