Fifteen “Power Sets” have been shipped to Sri Lanka from the Windawo harbor in China, Ministry of Transport announced.
This is the first consignment of Power Sets Sri Lanka is receiving after 15 years and with these the total number of Power Sets operating in the Ceylon Government Railway fleet will be fifty.
The Government of China bears the total cost of USD 40 million for these “Units” which are been sent under the Chinese Government’s aid programme to the Sri Lanka.
In addition the Sri Lanka Government has also allocated Rs. 1700 million to strengthen the railways system in the country.
These power sets have been especially designed and built by the Chinese entrepreneurs in accordance with the specifications of the Sri Lanka’s railway system.
Adding these 15 new “Power sets” to the existing fleet will help accommodate 400 passengers per trip.
The first shipment will arrive in Sri Lanka by the 3rd of next month, and will be added to the fleet with in the beginning of November, Transport Ministry sources said.
