Enlarge Sri Lanka have never won a series against the Australians at home but Mahela Jayawardene believes the time is right over the next couple of weeks. Jayawardene, the former captain, is hopeful of success in the three ODIs next month as the hosts deal with a busy schedule that includes preparing for the Ashes.
"We've improved quite a bit in the last couple of years and our away form is pretty good, that's something we've always been trying to improve," Jayawardene said in Brisbane. "It's a great opportunity for us.
"It's going to be a bit tough for Australia, with a bit of a hectic schedule. Some of them will be fresh and some of them won't be fresh but Australia is Australia."
While Sri Lanka warm-up for the main games, which start with a Twenty20 international in Perth on October 31, their opponents are still in India finishing off a 50-over series. Kumar Sangakkara's men play Queensland at the Gabba today before facing New South Wales on Sunday and Wednesday.
Australia have never lost a series in their backyard to Sri Lanka in Tests or ODIs since their opening encounter in 1984-85.

India, Sri Lanka favourites to win World Cup: Rodney Marsh

Dubai, Oct 22 (IANS) Former Australian wicket-keeper Rodney Marsh has tipped the sub-continent's countries to win the cricket World Cup in 2011, co-hosted by India, Sri lanka and Bangladesh.

Marsh, who played in the 1975 and 1983 World Cups in England said Thursday the teams from the south Asian sub-continent will be the ones to watch out for next year.

"I think the fact that the tournament is being held in the sub-continent means it will be very difficult for teams England, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa to win. I would think a team from Asia would be successful, perhaps Sri Lanka, I quite fancy them for the title and of course India," said Marsh.

On how Australia will fare in the tournament, Marsh opined: "We will get a fair idea of how Australia are going to fair in the World Cup once we have seen the results of the one-day games they are playing against India and also against England. We will also get an idea of how England and India are going to fare too with those results".

Marsh represented Australia in 92 one-day internationals.

    Sri Lanka 7 for 301 (Sangakkara 110, Silva 75, Laughlin 3-54) beat Queensland 189 (Philipson 69, Fernando 4-41, Prasad 3-43) by 112 runs

Sri Lanka rested four of their stars but Kumar Sangakkara's century was enough to kick off their tour with a comprehensive win over Queensland. The visitors left out Muttiah Muralitharan, Lasith Malinga, Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan, but still managed to register an imposing 7 for 301 after winning the toss at the Gabba.
Sangakkara racked up a brisk 110 and had strong support from Chamara Silva (75) in a 100-run partnership, after he also combined with Chamara Kapugedera for an 87-run stand. He brought up his hundred with a six off the legspinner Cameron Boyce, before he eventually fell to Ben Laughlin, caught at midwicket off a full toss.
It was an impressive effort given that Sangakkara shook off a hamstring strain to take part in the match, the first of three warm-ups before Sri Lanka begin their limited-overs series against Australia. The bowlers also enjoyed the outing and Dammika Prasad began the defence by running through the local top order.
Prasad finished with 3 for 43, including two wickets in the 14th over, and from there Queensland were never in the contest. Craig Philipson held off the Sri Lankans with a run-a-ball 69 but Dilhara Fernando troubled the lower order with 4 for 41 and finished off the Bulls in the 37th over.

Kumar Sangakkara loves having Muttiah Muralitharan in his side © AFP
Enlarge Muttiah Muralitharan's team-mates expect no lessening of the offspinner's powers as he begins life as an international limited-overs specialist. Murali, 38, retired from Tests in July with a record 800 wickets and after taking a break has been increasing his load ahead of engagements in Australia over the next three weeks.
He is part of the squad that has just landed in the country, a place in which he has often been treated poorly on both sides of the fence. The captain Kumar Sangakkara smiles when he talks about Murali's impact on the team and he will bolster the squad after missing the home tri-series victory in August.
But Sangakkara turns serious when discussing criticism of Murali. "It's always been unjustifiable if Murali has not been received well in any country," Sangakkara said. "Just for the bowler he is, the character he is, he is a wonderful human being. However the fans react to him, or whether they accept him, it doesn't matter in the long run because the whole cricketing world love him for who he is. And he's very secure in that."
Murali was called for throwing at the MCG in 1995-96 and boycotted the 2004 tour here following comments from John Howard, Australia's prime minister, over his action. While he was adored during the tsunami fundraising match in Melbourne in 2005, he was part of a Sri Lankan group that had eggs thrown at it in Hobart two years ago.
"We just want him to enjoy himself and play for as long as he wants to play and be part of our team," Sangakkara said. "It's a joy to see him play. For us to have him in our side is a huge boost of confidence."
Murali has come to Australia via South Africa, where he was part of Chennai's Champions League T20 victory, taking three wickets in the final. In 22 ODIs Down Under Murali has 31 victims at 32.70, with the home batsmen usually content to see out his overs.
The coach Trevor Bayliss expects Murali to benefit from his Test-free workload and not suffer during the transition. "At this stage of his career having a rest every now and then will be good for him," Bayliss said. "He's just had a little bit of time off and he's come back from the Champions League full of beans, and is bowling really well in the nets."
The Sri Lankans open their tour with a one-day game against Queensland at the Gabba on Friday and have some more fine-tuning before a Twenty20 in Perth on October 31 and three ODIs the following week. While it is hard to know what long-term benefits the visitors can achieve from such a short series, Sangakkara's aims are clear.
"Hopefully we get a victory in the series, that'll be great for us going forward," he said. "We know how tough it is in Australia. We've been here before and we're yet to win, this is a great challenge to the guys."
