I think that we have been too used to readymade things... We don't want to learn.. we only want to pass exams, so we attend tution classes which we can get readymade answers for the exam... parents feed us grinded food so we don't have to chew... I think I've started to think being with indians..I had to. Here even little children are very sharp and broad minded.
Actually Neo-indians who are more westernised in thinking, even surpassing westerners. It is said that the best computer programmers of the world are Indians..
Indians are brought up more disciplined and with more independance than us, Sri Lankans. They respect parents and teachers more than we do. To us it is more lip service.
There are very poor schools here taught in English medium..I feel sorry about Sri Lankan students who are still struggling with English.. I know one Sri Lankan Father who was against his clever daughter's admission to the english medium school. Principle begged him but he refuced. That is the mentality of us.
We are one of the very backward country in constant decline. You have to visit another country to see the difference. Whole system is made to make us more and more stupid... I feel so lucky to be here among with people whom I can grow with. Don't misunderstand me as condemning my own country.. but that is truth. As long as we cover our limitations with past glory we will never grow out of our limitations.

This i don't agree with you ... :) ...I don't know the attitudes of indians :) ...but i do know comparing with Srilankans :) ...nither Indians or any other country can't compite with us :) ....We have our weeknesses .... but they all can be corectable :) ....
Greatest weekness Srilankans have is they need a person who guided them :) ...now we have one :) .....and sisi i know some members didn't undestood what you tried to highlighted from your thread.....like i said it's your heading ..which miss guided most of us :) ...it's obvious because curently we all seeing these kind of threads saying Prabha is Hero :) ....

and i'm sad about you ...that you are happy to being with Indians :) ......
NIWANIN MEHA HODAMA RATA LANKAWAI :) ..... don't give up your mother land no matter what it did to you :) that's all i'm asking for :)

It is said that the best computer programmers of the world are Indians..

this is also wrong :) ....they may have Cyber cities :) ...but i know they are not great in computer side :) .....come to Srilanka :) i'll show you who are great programmers :) ....

and finally ....my english ....may not correct but it's ok with me :) ...it's not my mother language :) .....

I think this is the core problem, you are comparing your personal situation vs. whole Sri Lanka!

With all those English education, brains and broad thinking and what not , still an average Indian's quality of living is well below when compared to an average Sri Lankan's! Why?

Your criticism of the general "Sri Lankan" is quite scathing and harsh, but on one side I sadly have to agree. On the other side I have my own reservations to reject your claims, anyway every one is entitled to their own opinion.

Taking India and Sri Lanka, they may be near to each other, but the situation in both countries are totally different from each other. The development India had achieved is not quite spread around the country, there are super richs and on the other side of the road is a slum and abode to some of the poorest on the world. Also the education, culture and social development is totally irregular.

Taking Lanka, it is another case, coz it is a smaller country and less ethnically diverse than the large multi ethnic country India is, had see a level of development which is distributed, I'm not telling you that there are no super richs or super poors in Lanka, but considering the social development and "mentality" (i will exclude the warzone for obvious reasons) Lanka is way above others.

Your example of a father refusing his daughter english medium education is quite unbelievable to me. From what I've seen around in lanka and from the stories I've heard, the general attitude of a lankan towards english education is quite positive. And I strongly believe that teaching in sinhala/tamil medium after independence was a mistake, anyway now that is rectified and everyone has the chance to learn in english.

India might have introduced english medium education since their independence but that led to it schooling only being available to the socially affluent types. And to speak about the english communicating skills of Indians (i'm not trying to poke fun on them, just my opinion about the indians i've encountered) there are indians from andra pradesh(heart land of indian IT) in the place i study, they claim to have studied in english medium since their school days, but their communication skills are pretty null and heavily accented. They tend to stay in their own groups and never even try to come out and talk with others. It's a case of some language problem. We lankans here got no such prob and that had just added up to our prestige. :)

    This I sadly agree
Hi... Nice to know that you too are in India... Andhra also nice.. I think Hyderabadians are closer to Sri Lankans.. I think our local Gypsies (Ahikuntika) speak Telegu...
    I agree with your explanations.
I think Sri Lankans can surpass any nation if we followed Buddha's teaching as he wanted us. Indian Buddhists follow Buddha's teaching much deeper than us. I know many people here practice Buddhist meditation daily one hour morning and one hour.. There is are some very popular Buddhist meditation centers around.. The Government of Maharashtra had passed a Resolution that offers 10 days paid leave for senior government officials to undertake Buddhist Meditation courses.
We actually don't know Buddha's teaching. We have only memorised his words like our monks and I feel very dumb among Buddhist Indians and ashamed of our parents and teachers who deceived us making Buddha as a poor God to pray.
They talk deeper teachings very casually because they have been taught with the experience. For us they are mere words...
As far as I know in Hyderabad too, Buddhist Meditation is popular..
I agree that their education and development is not well spreaded.. but I think that many Indians are satisfied with what little they have... So poor don't suffer and they feel like affluent... This is my experience because once I visited a little village and they are very content with what they have.

A death can be helpful to a society or harmful.

    And your point is?

Well I see the bend that you take, you arent directing it to anyone particularly... thats a start.

Well, some deaths are preferrable, some are not...

A specific "source of thought" could be something I dont like, but you like or vice versa... But the destruction cannot neccesarily change one's perspective... The solution is to change the environment to accomadate the best "source"...for the betterment of the soceity, atleast most of it

Meditation is just a part of Buddhism it does not reflect Buddha's teachings as a whole, if you say since people are Meditating they are much deeper into Buddhism than us, then that's a very wrong statement, because the best way, infact the only way to show that you are in line with Buddhism is behave like a Buddhist and be a practical Buddhist!

Besdies, Meditation wasn't a thing that Lord Buddha invented.. it was practiced by Hinduism way before Buddhists, so meditation was adopted from Hinduism to Buddhism but on Buddhist terms!

Why only senor officials? Others should not meditate?

For all you know this could be a good business deal between the govt. and the meditation institutions, I dont have to remind you that India also more corrupted than Sri Lanka in terms of politics!

Again! dont drag your situation into the discussion  sorry to say that your lack of knowledge on Buddhism does not apply to all!

And remember you are talking about a country that worships GODs more than anywhere else in this world I would assume, God's with Elephant Heads, 100's of arms and legs... how do you explain those?

If you say Sri Lankans worship gods therefore we are inferior, what would you say to India.. the birth place of them? and still the main religion in the country!

Here's the fault in your comparison, you say Indian Poor are satisfied with what they have so they dont suffer!

    But the FACT is:

Indian Poor = Poor than Sri Lankan Poor

but you say Sri Lankans suffer... how?

First to clarify, I'm not in india but in china. . .there are indian students from andra pradesh and and all around the rest of india in the city i live in. I don't have a low opinion about indians, there are some nice people. I just wanted to point out the behavior of the majority of the people i encounter here. I'm not sure about the language gypsies speak but I know that south indian languages like malayalam and telegu are linked with tamil and it is easy to converse with a person who understands telegu or malayalam in tamil and they will understand you.

People can be satisfied, but it still doesn't mean they are socially developed. For eg, If people continue to die of infectious diseases which could be simply controlled by proper medical access and increased awareness, then there is something with the social hierarchy, and policies of the country. Take a disease like cholera, an epidemic of cholera can be disastrous for a slum community in India coz of poor awareness and medical care being limited (i fear that can be a situation for our own idp camps, but so far the situation seems controlled) but in lanka a poor community have much better access to health care, and even they are economically poor they have the education to tackle a situation and so finally can be controlled before it goes out of hand. :)

I agree there is something wrong in the way buddhism is maintained in lanka. And I don't want to talk about the mentality of most of the monks. But still we got monks who have a deep understanding of the teachings and they have tried to give it to the layperson in a different way. I will not try to recall any names, but most of the famous monks (in dhamma i mean, not politics :P) have a following coz they are radical in the way they preach, and they way they advise.

Talking about Indian religions, I'd like to mention the jains. They are a minority(less than 0.5% of population), but accounts for more than 20% of the income tax (wikipedia) Think of that :)

But more large the country more resources you have, also more people increase chance of having more talents?

So being big also proportionately increase other capabilities too!

So where did India go wrong.. look at CHINA for example!!
