    why did GDI fail?

    PS: Pajero io, Montero

They say GDI was designed for the premium fuel standard in Japan (Octane 98-100). Mitsubishi didn't even export GDI models to Sri Lanka, all GDI vehicles in Sri Lanka are grey imports

    Common 'market eke katha'

GDIs need 95 octane (or more)

92 has more sulfur and it becomes an oxidize in the injectors.

GDIs are not good for SL because petrol here has a LOT of sulfur

That is why GDIs failed in SL.

Sulfur content in petrol isn't a factor when branding petrol as "premium". Only the octane rating is. That's why I said sulfur content is applicable only to diesel fuels

You see, 95 octane could contain more sulfur than 92 octane - pumping 95 octane hoping for lower sulfur levels is fruitless.

Take a look at sulfur ratings of petrol available in Sri Lanka:

    http://ceypetco.gov.lk/ceypetco-products/

SPECIFICATION FOR PETROL (A0023L99) – 92 OCTANE (Regular)

    Total Sulphur content mg/kg : Max 300

SPECIFICATION FOR PETROL (A0018L99) – 95 OCTANE (premium)

    Total Sulphur content mg/kg : Max 500

Some vehicles do require 95 octane petrol though

About GDI issues - opinions of technicians are mixed and vary. One single issue cannot be isolated 'cause it's not the same thing that makes a GDI engine to act up when it's run pumping "Sri Lankan standard" fuel. Like you said, some say high sulfur content (Edit: fuel composition) leads to injector fouling and it results in pre-ignition in GDI engines, Some say pre-ignition and other issues of GDI engines is the result of lower octane fuel available in Sri Lanka.

There are GDI vehicles running without a hiccup for years, and then there are GDI vehicles that have to be carried to the nearest garage every six months or so

All in all, I wouldn't recommend a GDI to anyone in Sri Lanka :dull:

Nissan QR20DD (Neo-Di) aka GDI. compression ratio 10.5:1. either with 92 or 95, there is no noticeable different in KM/L or performance.

The only issue I had is two of my injectors started to LEAK (not clogged). this seems kind of normal because the abnormal wear of the pintle causing leaks (due to high pressure)

Replaced all 4 injectors ( http://www.elakiri.com/forum/showpost.php?p=22291413&postcount=4989 ) and no more issues so far.
