Depends. Companies like Apple has a track record of intentionally slowing down the device with each update. Don't know about Nvidia but mostly you need driver updates and BIOS updates. They come up with better stuff and new features that you may need. For example I recently had to update BIOS to unlock new virtualization features in my motherboard. It fixed some other stuff as well. Nvidia updates I always do because it always made stuff better.
