a SLIIT student told me that there is just a one degree program in their institute for those who wish to do IT.

he said that as in APIIT, in SLIIT students cant select what they want to do.

eg- in APIIT students can chose any thing from these things

• B.Sc (Hons) Computing
• B.Sc (Hons) Computing with specialisation in Software Engineering
• B.Sc (Hons) Computing with specialisation in Multimedia
• B.Sc (Hons) Computing with specialisation in Web Development
• B.Sc (Hons) E-Commerce
but a SLIIT student cant select their path like this . they just have only 1 course to do.

this is what he said to me. is it true??

kk...tx 4 ur details .....

[I didn't get your last sentence machang...]

I know you have some knowledge in hardware field ne?

So better start with something like CCNA machang. (Cisco Certified Network Associate.)

Then you can do CCNP (CC NW Professional.) and finally CCIE (CC Internet Expert)

CCNA, CCNP and CCIE are relevent to the Routing and Switching sub section machang.

    See this diagram.
    ciscoro3.jpg

And go to this link for more info : http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/le...hs_ home.html

CISCO seems like the best path for you bro :D

This is not a degree. But a professional level qualification. Don't know about Networking 'degrees' in SL machang. But Cisco qualifications are more recognised than a degree in the industry :)
Gee,many many thanx.I was aware of CISCO network certifications and I am hoping to learn for CCNA end of the year.:D I didn't thought far to the 3rd one you said but only to CCNA and CCNP.And I need some sort of degree which involves Networking of computers and Internet. Not like you know phone networking things. Can you name the subjects or things which I should look in for that kind of a degree? TIA.

    np bro :D

A sort of a 'good' networking degree should have:

Discreet Mathematics - Algorithms, time complexity, analysis, Counting, permutations and combinations. Graphs, paths and cycles. Boolean algebra, circuit synthesis.

Network Fundamentals - Layered network models., physical, data link, network, and transport layer technologies., Local Area Networks (wired and wireless)., TCP/IP Internetworking., Routing algorithms., IP Addressing.

Some sort of a Systems Analysis subject - Feasibility studies and systems analysis, Make versus buy. Internal verification and external validation issues and techniques., Interfaces between the systems analyst and: the organisation, primary systems users, systems designers and systems suppliers.

    Network Architecture
    - Data-link, Network and Transport Layer Terminology;, Hierarchical and Logical Network Design; VLSM IP addressing and Naming; Routing Protocols including RIP, OSPF, and EIGRP; VOIP Technologies; WAN Technologies such as Point to Point Protocol (PPP), ISDN, Frame Relay, ATM, DSL., Network Testing and Documentation.

Network Management - Business drivers and strategic planning, Security issues in network design, Pricing Models and service level agreements, Regulations and standards, Integration and of new technologies and migration issues, Access and backbone network design.

Computer and Network Security - Cryptography: classical and modern; secret-key and public-key; theory and practical cryptography. Computer and network security: securing a host machine, hacking and defensive countermeasures.

Internet Technology - Transmission Control Protocol, User Datagram Protocol, Datagram Congestion Control Protocol; Electronic commerce (the Internet Open Trading Protocol); Web services; Mobile IP; Mobile Data (eg the Wireless Application Protocol, Multimedia Messaging Service); Real Time Protocol; Multimedia over Packet Networks (ITU-T Recommendations H.323, H.245); Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP); Electronic Mail; Domain Name Service; File Transfer; Middleware: Object Management Architecture, object request brokers (CORBA, OLE/COM).

    Mobile Application Development (maybe)

    Some e-commerce (maybe)

Linear Programming - (Linear optimisation models; Solution to IP problems; geometry, branch and bound. Network models; transportation; assignment, shortest path.)

    Stuff like that :)

Ya ya just one IT degree machang. (Well.. 2)

they have just 5 undergraduate degrees.

    BSc(Hons) in IT
    BSc in IT (Curtin)
    BSc in IS
    BSc in Networking
    BIT

Yes the selection is sort of poor. But the IT degree covers all aspects like sw engineering, multimedia, networking, some management etc.

    For more: http://www.sliit.lk/BSC/BSc_Overview.htm

then, is APIIT better than SLIIT??? apiit has some options to choosene :D

what will u recommend for a better IT degree ?? SLIIT, APIIT or ACBT?? or if u know a better 1, pls mention it.

and what is IS aiye?? :)

Well as far as i know there is no such thing. SLIIT also offers a gr8 number of choices. Maybe there is one general year for all students and from the 2nd year onwards you can select ur field.

xpert aiya said that their isnt any thing to select. he said in that degree they cover all the areas such as management, software eng, etc.
i think its not a good thing when comparing other institutes. hell they give a lot of options to select :D

Uba wadiyenma aadare ammatada? or allapu gedara auntytada?

Machang mama giye SLIIT. So APIIT da wada hoda SLIIT da wada hoda kiyala mama kiyana eka hari nahane :) Mata hoda SLIIT. Mokada mama danne eeka gana witharai :)

Oya dekatama giyapu kenekta thamai hariyatama hoda mokakda kiyala kiyanna puluwan. But ehema dekatama giyapu aya nahane :)

Oya okkoma naraka naha machang. It's a matter of your ability to learn...

All institutes teach some good stuff. Then we have to learn everything by ourselves by doing research etc. Coz Higher education is not like O/L and A/L. 'WE' have to do most of the work by ourselves.... alone.. :)

Like Nuwa said IS = Information Systems.

Most of the subjects in SLIIT's IS degree is similar to the IT degree... Only 3 or 4 subjects are different I reckon. (Not too sure though)

APIIT and ACBT costs a lot compared to SLIIT.

SLIIT have a more 'free' feeling....

Anyway the institution doesn't matter (from above 3) as long as you get a good GPA. (Avarage marks)
