    - I'm just doing what they asked me to do.

    - Who's 'they"?

    - The angels.

    - The angels? The angels told you to paint the bricks black?

    - Yes, I know what you're going to say and I don't care. They were here last night. They told me I was chosen to help them. That all I needed to do was to build a door of black bricks in my room, and another one in the basement.

    - What's wrong with you? Tell me. What's the matter?

    - You don't get it, do you? You don't understand anything at all.···They took me to a horrible place. It was dark. They said God wanted to have a child with me. That I shouldn't be afraid. One of them walked towards me and put his face right in front of mine. The others kept staring at me. But I couldn't do anything. I couldn't scream. He put his hand on my forehead, and his fingers on my face. He closed my eyes, and he took my clothes off.

    - I, Hidetora Ichimonji, was born in that small castle in the mountains. At that time, the entire plain seethed with constant battle. Many lords vied for power. I waged wars for fifty years, and at last the plain was mine. Now, the moment has come to stable the steeds of war and give free rein to peace. I hereby cede total authority over all my dominions to my eldest son Taro. I've thought long and hard. There comes a time to step aside, and pass on the reins to younger hands. I say to you: that time is now! This is my will. Taro is now head of the Ichimonjis, lord of this lands. I will quit the castle keep and move to the outer tower. I will retain a 30-man escort and give the title and insignia of Great Lord. I give my middle son Jiro and youngest son Saburo, the Second and Third castles with their attendant lands. You will support Taro in the First Castle. Whenever Taro is in trouble, if you unite your forces, the house of Ichimonji will be safe.

    - Your plan is absurd. You are either senile or mad.

    - Silence Saburo! Do not insult your father! What madness have I spoken? Wherein lies my senility?

    - What kind of world do we live in? One barren of loyalty and feeling. You spilled measureless blood. You showed no mercy, no pity. We too are children of this age, weaned on strife and chaos. We are your sons, yet you count on our fidelity. In my eyes, that makes you a fool. A senile old fool!

    QK8dLdU.jpg

"I, Hidetora, was attacked by my own sons. I was betrayed by my vassal. That's not the worst. Because of me, my loyal men died a useless death. As fate would have it, only I survived, I, who should have died.······ I'm lost. This path, I remember.···Is this a dream? No, this is Hell. The lowest level of Hell"

    gPnD7FI.jpg

    - What a sky! Am I in the other world? Is this paradise?
    - Father!
    - Why are you so cruel? Why pull me from my grave? Don't you know me?
    - Father!
    - Father? What do you mean by "father"? Wait, I remember. I had three sons. Are you one of them?
    - Yes, I am Saburo.
    - Saburo? Saburo! I have no face to show you, no words to excuse myself. Give me poison to drink, I'll swallow it gladly.
    - Don't talk like that. I don't hate you, Father. Come with me. You'll live with us, and forget this bad dream.
    - If only you can forget my cruelty to you. Forgive me. I am a stupid old fool.

    - Are there no gods... no Buddha? If you exist, hear me! You are mischievous and cruel! Are you so bored up there, you must crush us like ants? Is it such fun to see men weep?

    YJoQMBr.jpg

    - Enough! Do not blaspheme! It is the gods who weep. They see us killing each other over and over since time began. They can't save us from ourselves. Don't cry. It's how the world is made. Men prefer sorrow over joy, suffering over peace. Look at them in the Castles. They revel in pain and bloodshed. They celebrate murder.

    - Now, in order to properly pronounce my name, I'll need you to do two things. First, stick out your tongue then grab the tip of it gently between your first finger and thumb.

    - What the fuck? Seriously?

    - I know it's a peculiar request, but I promise it is necessary. You're doing it?

    - Yeah.

    - Very good. I haven't had a chance to tell anyone my name for so long. I'm very excited. Now repeat after me. Got another one.

    - Got another one?

    - Slow it down a bit. Slower and grip tighter.

    - Gha...ta...no...tho...a. Ghatanothoa?

    - Yes!

    - What? Your name is Ghatanothoa?

    - Indeed it is. Sorry for the theatrics. I'm a bit of a stickler for proper enunciation. It's the name of a very lonely, very old god.

    - It's fine, man. It's an interesting name. That's who you were named after? So, like, hippie parents?

    - Not quite. I am he.

    - You are who?

    - I am that god.

    - So you're a god living in a rest stop bathroom in a stall that's glory hole adjacent. Is that it?

    - I suppose in some mythologies, you could say demigod. Titan would be more accurate, but those are human constructs, limiting the full understanding of what I truly am.

    QpnOXUj.jpg

    - How about a story? Once there was a being of pure energy all alone in an ocean of infinite nothing. Until it discovered the power to give physical form to its thoughts and feelings. This power disturbed him greatly. It just couldn't stop these thoughts and feelings from filling the empty void. They became his unwanted children. Enraged by their presence, he set out to destroy them. During the conflict, his oldest child sliced through his side. The blood that flowed from the wound filled the infinite nothing, becoming the planets and the stars and life. He watched in horror as his precious void filled with feelings. He begged his children to close the wound, to stop any more new life from forming. His children agreed, but only if he would let this new life continue to exist. He conceded. But he so loathed humanity that he secretly created a being of pure destruction, capable of undoing all life and returning back to the infinite nothing. He created...me. Doing so greatly weakened him, allowing my siblings to overpower him and lock him away in the deepest, darkest pit in the deepest, darkest ocean. Then they hid me away in the ether. And there I remained until now.

    - All cultures believe in some kind of hell, just as they believe in some kind of God.

    - I wonder how many of them believe God hangs out in rest stop bathrooms waiting to blow up the world.

    - I don't want that to happen. I want to stop this. I've started feeling a connection to life and humanity. My power to hide from my father is fading. He's already broken free from his prison and is searching for me. Once I fully enter into the material world, I'll fulfill my father's purpose for me the total annihilation of all life in the universe. And only you can stop my transformation. Only you can give me what I need to return to my ethereal form. I need you to satisfy these feelings that have awakened to me. Quiet them. There's only one part of you that can do that.

    - Yeah, which is why it's more lucrative.

A scenario of such devastation that it looked like a monster had wreaked havoc in Lord Alexander's house. The eight bodies that have been found at the scene. In the very room where the tragedy took place, judging by the looks of it, it must have been the of a sort of black mass ceremony which ended horribly. It was a real massacre. The investigators are focusing on three strange details. A guitar not belonging to any member of the staff was found in the servants' quarters. Pearls, seemingly from a valuable necklace were found spread on the stairs of the massacre room. There's one last grisly, mysterious detail. Lady Alexander wasn't accounted for among the eight bodies found at the scene. Unfortunately, it would seem apparent that the she was murdered as well. It would seem that this gruesome massacre, strangely reminiscent of Sharon Tate's murder"

[In June of 1981, 17 year old Dwight Tufford left his Aspen home to drive 23 hours to Knoxville. Once there, he did the unthinkable, killing 13 people and injuring nearly two dozen more in just a matter of minutes. From the top of the tower in the middle of campus, Tufford took aim at the crowd below with a high powered rifle. During the trial, Tufford told the judge he was innocent, and testified he was brainwashed into committing the killings after reading the controversial novel, The Infernal Machine]

    O35SOYG.jpg

[Mr. DuKent. This is Bruce Cogburn. I'm calling in response to the letters I've received from you. I'm not sure how you found me. Perhaps you got my PO box from an old agent or summit. If so, that information was never meant to be shared. Nevertheless, it seems from your letters, you know quite a bit about me. Anyway, I want to wish you all the best with your book, ::: Mr. DuKent. Now, I feel I've been nothing but courteous when it comes to your book and how I have no interest in helping you with it. But it seems I'm not making myself clear. So, piss off. Your letters are unsolicited and constitute harassment, so please, stop sending them. You keep asking me, why I never wrote a second book. 21st June. 1981. Knoxville. But you know that. ::: Mr. DuKent. In the A few days ago, I received a package on my doorstep. It was a box of ink ribbons for a very specific typewriter. The one I used when I wrote my book. I should tell you that some of the things that have been said about me are true. For instance, if I find anyone trespassing on my land that person will be shot on sight. That's not a threat. That's just a fact. So, stay away from me and my home and do not test the sincerity of my resolve. ::: Mr. DuKent. You might be the most persistent fucking person I've never even met. Ninety handwritten letters in this day and age is no small task. However, it has to stop. I was someone important once. But that seems to tell a lot of people that I am supposed to represent whatever their particular fantasy of a hero is supposed to be. But, my opinions are my own. Okay? So, I suggest you go out into the world and you discover for yourself and you trust your own senses 'cause I'm not here to be someone's fucking inspiration. ::: I know where we are, Mr. DuKent. I know exactly where we are. We're at the end of act two, aren't we? That's where the protagonist reaches their limits. Questions their worth. Their sanity. Everything. Because they know the path traveled pales in comparison to what lies ahead. And it's in this moment, Mr. DuKent, that a decision must be made. Do they carry on, or do they stop and go back? But only they can make that choice. And that, Mr. DuKent, is where you fucked up. Because your protagonist is too aware of your narrative now, and to make matters worse, he's also a writer. So he knows exactly what a good story needs, and also how to sabotage one. What's the greatest sin a writer can commit? Do you know? Being dull. And that's exactly what I'm going to give you, you stupid fucking cunt. A long, drawn out, uneventful, boring ending. Because nobody gives a damn about an inspired second act if your finale is a big pile of shit. Wouldn't you agree?]

    6fCkpTP.jpg

    - I'm just here to talk. About William DuKent. Tell me what he wanted from you.
    - My opinion.
    - Your opinion about what?
    - A book. The Infernal Machine. You ever read it?
    - No.
    - Good. Don't. That book will fuck you up. The right combination of words will make a man do just about anything. You ever heard of number stations before? During the Cold War, there was these short wave radio broadcasts that sent out these cryptic messages across the airwaves. Usually, a woman's voice spouting out numbers and shit in German. And to the general public, it sounded like a bunch of nonsense, when in actual fact, it was a complex cipher.
    - What, are you saying there's a hidden message in that book?
    - Something like that.
    - Why did DuKent want your opinion?
    - He wanted to know if I saw the same things in the book as he did.
    ...............................................................
    - If you need to turn someone's world upside down, then you hire me. Do you know, the difference between you and I is that I know what I am. I'm a liar. And I'm fucking good at it. I can be anything you want me to be. Could be a person, a company, a scenario. Usually, the marks are sort of politicians and CEOs. They're always boring. They're always forgettable. And that's what separates you from them. But you're not forgettable. And that's why I took this assignment. Because history is going to remember you, Bruce. And that really bothers me. All the world will know there's artistic genius, but you and I know there's no artistic genius. There's no mystique. You got lucky. You built your ivory tower brick by brick with lies. And I'm here to make sure you burn in it.
    - Listen, I don't know Who are you?
    - Nobody important. I'm just the messenger.
    - Then who's sending the fucking messages?
    - Don't worry, Bruce. You'll see him soon enough.

"Cause and effect. Action and reaction. If you know the physical properties of something, you can make it do almost anything you want. Human beings are no different. I'm not a fortune teller, I'm just a writer. You see, all I did was place a few obstacles in your path, and then I waited to see what you would do. Every story ends in one of two ways. Either the hero faces his fears and is reborn, or he is punished for failing to change. And I'm really curious, Professor Cogburn. Which one are you? Since you stole my first book, I thought you wouldn't mind helping me write my second book. But then the more I wrote, the more I realized, This is not my story. I know you didn't write it. But you lived it. Every page, every line, every word"

"I was dead. For 19 minutes. Would you like to know what I found on the other side? I found nothing. My whole life, I blamed God for everything that was wrong with me, and I wanted so much for the world to know Him the way that I knew Him as a child, a cruel child with a magnifying glass. And we are just the ants that He plays with. But then I died. And I realized there is no child. There is no magnifying glass. There is only us ants. And we are the ones who started the fire. - Manju?
    - Yes. Manju. Manju Yadav. After you died grandpa, I left the village and ran away to Mumbai. Worked hard, drove a truck. 40 years whizzed by. I never got married. I wanted to see her just one more time. But just like you, even I died of a heart attack. Under the very tree, you were peeing last night. Since then, my spirit's been hanging there.
    - Sorry, I didn't know.
    - You've been reborn. We met so that you can fulfill your promise to me.

    - Why are you two making faces? It's the birthplace of Lord Ram and Krishna. The confluence of Ganga and Jamuna rivers. And Manju lives there. How are we going? I won't go in an airplane.
    - Odd, a ghost scared of an airplane. How else will we go?
    - I never sat in a train or an airplane. I always drove cars and trucks.

    - It's not about being negative or positive. It's pretty frank. We should know whether she's dead or alive. I am saying that we don't know, whether the one we're looking for is alive or not. I am not trying to find flaws. I am being practical. Fine, let's admit she's alive. But what if we get there, and find out she got married.
    - What's your problem? Someone's love is alive even after he's dead! He wants to fill that void, and is using us as a medium, So that's a good thing.
    - But there's no logic in it.
    - Logic? This is your rebirth. Your grandson is a middle aged Sardar, who is dead. And his ghost is with us, Do you see the logic in any of this? There is no logic. But it's all happening.
    - That's the problem.
    - No, the problem is you. You know, you take all your relationships for granted.
    - Wait a minute, this is not about us, understand.
    - This is about us! We've been together since college. When you didn't want to get married, and be in a live-in. That's okay, I am there. Quit your job, that's okay. I am there. You started doing stand-up. That's okay, I am there. In every stand-up, you made fun of our relationship, but that's okay. I let it pass as a joke. Why? Because I love you. But you don't appreciate it, and you know what. Appreciation of love should be expressed. And someone else wants to do it even after he's dead, then don't raise stupid questions.

    uKNkRM2.jpg

    - I loved her a lot. Actually, I still do. And we also fought a lot.
    - You two had fights?
    - Everyone does. Back then, I used to think 'why me'. "Why should I apologize?" And she thought, why should she apologize. Childishness. But as the years went by, I realized. If there's a fire, it needs to be put out first. Whether she does it first or me.
    - Meaning?
    - Ego, Me...I... It's the journey from 'me' to 'us', These fights are hard to get out of your mind. So it's better to make some happy memories.

    - I'm not gonna be fighting no one, I'm just delivering beers.

    - You don't get it, do you, Chick? This isn't a John Wayne movie, all right? Where you know who the good guys are and the bad guys are. This is guerrilla warfare, and they can come at you from anywhere, at any time. Bringing beers into a fucking war zone? That's a bat shit crazy idea. I mean, you didn't really think you can pull this off, did you?

    - Why the hell you think I came all the way to 'Nam?
    ··········································
    - Don't you get it? He thinks your man here is a "tourist."

    - What do you mean? I am a tourist.

    - Tourist is what we call CIA. Man, who else but CIA would be headed up country, dressed like they're going on a golf trip? The military brass does not like to mix it up with CIA. Yeah, that's the quickest way to get your ass reassigned to combat patrol.

    - You're kidding me. He thinks I'm CIA? Like James Bond? Well, in that case…

    vFfChYl.jpg

    - Seriously, Chickie, what the hell are you doing here? Really. You dumb shit! You almost got me killed out there!

    - Wait a minute, You mean to tell me this asshole's a civilian? Is he nuts?

    - Yeah. Yes, Sarge. I don't know. Chickie, are you nuts? You're delivering beer in a battle zone? This is a goddamn war, Donohue. You shouldn't be here.
    ··········································
    - Who's this hand job?

    - He's my next door neighbor. He brought me a beer.

    - What the hell does that mean?

    - It means he jumped on a freight in New York. Came all the way out here. Bring me a beer.

    n3CHNph.jpg

    - But then why do you press guys just report the bad stuff? That's what we hear back home. I mean, doesn't that hurt us? Like, as a country?

    - The truth? The truth hurts us? No. The truth doesn't hurt us. It's the lies. The lies and the conspiracy to distort the truth, that's what hurts America. You've seen the soldiers we've got out here. They're just kids. Good kids being patriots. Doing what their country asks. And I want the truth told for them. The people running this war, they're not patriots. They're politicians. And they deal in the currency of lies. And if the lies continue, they're just gonna keep sending boys out here to be killed to justify the boys who already got killed.···

    - ···This ain't a war no more. It's mass murder.

    - That's what war is, Chick. It's one giant crime scene.

    - It was more than just not being able to hear anything, or make contact with anyone. It was as though for a time I didn't exist. As though I had no place in the world, no part of the life around me.
    - And then you saw this man?
    - Yes. He's been following me. That's all there is to it.
    - It isn't that simple though, is it?
    - What do you mean?
    - He couldn't have been in the park this afternoon, or one of us men would've seen him. And that night in the hallway, you said yourself the landlady came up a minute later, and she didn't see him?
    - What are you driving at?
    - It's been less than a week since you were in a car that crashed into the river. How you got out of that no one seems to know. But that experience must have been a serious emotional shock.
    - You think I imagined all of it, don't you? You think I'm insane?
    - I didn't say that. I don't mean that.
    - I'm a competent person. If anything, I'm a realist. I'm not given to imagining anything.
    - Hogwash. All of us imagine things. Have you ever heard two men talking behind your back and imagined they were talking about you? Have you never imagined you saw someone you knew, and walked up to them and found they were a perfect stranger? Our imaginations play tricks on us. They often misinterpret what we see and hear.
    - It doesn't seem possible that I could have imagined all of it.

    - Does this man, this figure, resemble anyone you've ever known? An acquaintance, or your father?
    - No.
    - Have a boyfriend here or back home?
    - No, no desire for one.
    - Never?
    - No. I'm surprised to find myself saying that, but it's true. I have no desire for the close company of other people.
    - Have you always felt this way? Don't you want to join in the things that other people do, share the experiences of other people?
    - I don't seem capable of being very close to people. I do feel that perhaps I'm trying to reach out for those other things.
    - I'm not a psychiatrist, and perhaps I'm being clumsy at all this, but I am suggesting that perhaps this figure represents a guilt feeling.
    - Oh, that's ridiculous! Doctor. Well, I know one thing. If my imagination is playing tricks on me, I'm going to put a stop to it.
    - That old pavilion out by the lake. Somehow you associate it with all this, don't you?

    - Did you know why Pierce wanted you to kill me?

    - Sure. So he could legally steal your land once he found there was gold on it. You were a hard working rancher defending your property, yet it's you who gets shot, framed and sent to jail. Old Pierce found a lot of gold on your land.

    - That ore assays out at $643 a ton, normally. But they've hit the mother lode, which'll be 1,200% richer 'till the load runs out.

    - For a man who's been out a short while, you know a lot about Mr. Pierce's business.

    - He's important to me.

    - You thinking about his gold?

    - My gold.

    - Forget it. At town or at the mine, you can't get within a mile of it.

    - How 'bout out of town?

    - I guess you don't know 'bout his new toy. A little iron plated thing he calls "the war wagon."

    - Takes an average shipment of 50,000 in gold from Emmett to the rail head in El Paso, 43 and a half miles away.

    - There are a few guards.

    - Thirty three of 'em. Twenty eight outriders and five in the coach. Each man is armed with a Henry repeating rifle, two Colts, and 200 rounds of ammunition.

    - What's this all got to do with me?

    - We're gonna take that wagon.

    - We are? You taken a look lately at the cemetery at Emmett? There's a big bunch of cheap wooden crosses in one corner, all kind of crowded in together. That's the tribute to the last fools who tried to stop the war wagon. You like facts? $1. 15 for the casket, 12 cents for the crosses. Pierce foots the bill. $1. 27 seems a poor price to pay for a man's life. Especially mine.

    - In four days, Pierce is gonna make the biggest gold shipment ever made out of the territory. A half a million dollars.

    - Half million? How we gonna take it, with the Prussian Army?

    - With three other fellas. Five of us.

    - Five! I'm kind of glad I didn't kill you tonight. You're funny as hell.

    - Wanna hear how?

    - How we end up in jail, hanged or on the run?

    - Not if we do it my way. $100,000. That's your share. You ready to listen?

    - Why me?

    - You're good with guns. Besides, you're the only safecracker I know.

    - All right, let's hear it.

    - Why's the MPAF involved in this operation?
    - Our leader changed the plan.
    - Starting with Operation Flare, we'll attack the South militarily.
    - Operation Flare? That's nonsense, an all out war?! You think the USA will just stand by?
    - Doesn’t matter, 6 hours is all we need to take the South.
    - But millions will die in those 6 hours! Our original plan to negotiate after killing South Korean president is most practical! Reunification is the party's goal, no?! Don't spoil the plan for peaceful revolution.
    ··················································
    - North Korea has a plan in motion to assassinate the president of South Korea.
    - What? North Koreans?
    - We obtained this intel at a raid we conducted today. Once they successfully assassinate the president, we can initiate Operation New World.
    - You want to carry out a joint op with the North? That’s preposterous. How is that a revolution? It has to be justified. We'll hold hands with commies?
    - This is not a revolution! It’s about stopping the gruesome violence against our people. That's our justification.

    - Why did you let me walk? You know who I am.
    - You know what I'm trying to do.
    - How long can you fight violence with violence? You think the world will change by removing one dictator?
    - You've seen how this dictatorship evolved. It's time to end it.
    - Once he's assassinated, the invasion begins. That's North Korea's plan.
    - Reunification by force? Are you still fooled by such political theater?

In 19th century Japan, there were people called 'Toseinin'. Although they carry a sword, they are not samurai. They were formerly farmers and townsmen, and most of them were no longer listed on the family register. They were homeless and jobless, and made their living from gambling and its related petty crimes. Once 'Toseinin' made the code of jingi, they could get meals, a place to sleep, and a small traveling donation.

    - You've seen him too, didn't you? Well then maybe he's not dead after all.
    - Paul is dead. I saw him die. We scattered his ashes. This isn't Paul.
    - Then what the hell? Who is he? What is it?
    - No person could have done this. All along, he's been manipulating our moods. Maybe even our sense of reality.
    - Playing with us?
    - Worse. Experimenting with us.
    - Experimenting?
    - I don't know why I didn't see this before. Hell, I do the same thing every day in the lab! I put animals in confinement and I study their behavior. He gives a stimulus like the girls, like the dead body. We fight over the girls, we spill our guts with grief, and he sits back and watches, making notes. And then when it's over, he cleans the cage.
    - Cleans the cage?
    - He makes it look as if nothing happened, tries to make us forget so we're fresh for the next experiment. Hell, there was even a control group. One of us was always on the outside. Right? Brad, didn't slice up the bear. You weren't at the funeral. I never saw the girls.
    - You're right. We're just rats in a cage.
    ········································
    - It changed.
    - I know, I saw it changing.
    - You were thinking about Paul, right? This is the way you remember him. Do it again. Think about him another way.
    - What do you mean?
    - Think about a moment.
    - What the hell? It reads our memories and that's what it becomes.
