A special edition of the ABC news program "Viewpoint" followed the airing of The Day After 1983 movie. Featuring American astrophysicist and science communicator Carl Sagan, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Elie Wiesel, former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, General Brent Scowcroft, and the commentator William F. Buckley Jr.

Sagan argued against nuclear proliferation, but Buckley promoted the concept of nuclear deterrence. Sagan described the arms race in the following terms: "Imagine a room awash in gasoline, and there are two implacable enemies in that room. One of them has nine thousand matches, the other seven thousand matches. Each of them is concerned about who's ahead, who's stronger."

The monkey was revived just seconds after going unconscious. Watching the scene closely, the viewer can clearly see a shadow moving towards the monkey just as it goes limp.

- Yes. Well, that's not a new theory. The philosopher Descartes believed it was the third eye.

- It's not a theory. It's a fact.

- Then your experiments worked. They proved the theory. Then what went wrong?

- Nothing, at first. But then we saw them. We saw creatures, these things that were swimming around in the air and fill it all the time. Only we can't see them without the resonator and they can't see us, unless they're under the influence of the vibrations. That's why I had to destroy it. The resonator. Dr. Pretorious's invention. Because it came. It ate him. Bit off his head.

- I don't think that's a tumour. I think the pineal gland is growing.

- That's impossible.

- I know but the CAT scan bears it out. The pineal stalk is elongating through the brain. Well, it could mean that the experiment they were performing actually does stimulate the pineal.

- Expansion of the pineal. I'll have to do a study of the CAT scans of schizophrenics. If there's a statistical correlation between schizophrenia and an enlarged pineal, they may be seeing or feeling what we saw. Their minds may be influenced by those creatures. - Hasn't his heart stopped yet? Is something wrong with the noose? What's going on?

- The heart usually stops in 12 minutes, It's been 21. R** still has a pulse. When it stops, he's legally dead. His pulse isn't weakening. Sir, allow us to execute him again.

- But he hasn't been executed yet. I don't have the statute here, but I'm pretty sure Article 479 of the Criminal Code says that if he's mentally incapacitated, by order of the justice minister, the execution must be halted. In that case if we try to execute him again, we'd be breaking the law.

- R was unusually calm, wasn't he? What if he says he doesn't want to die? His body's already clearly refused! And if his soul refuses, will you halt the execution?

- Of course not! His soul accepted its fate. He let himself be blindfolded!

- That was before. But this is not the same R. It won't be the R who committed the crimes and admitted his guilt. We have to make him remember who he is. Doctor, what's the medical term for this condition? How long until he recovers?

Film follows R, a fictional character based off of Ri Chin’u, an ethnic Korean who murdered and raped two Japanese school girls in 1958, and later gained much attention in, a collection of writings on his crimes. His writing became known for his sophisticated prose and philosophical musings which denied criminality for his sex murders, insisting that he had acted on them in a realm where he could not distinguish between reality and fantasy.
Captured by the absurdity of Ri Chin’u's writings. Film directer creates a fictional character R, who expresses similar sentiments. and uses to explore the complex issues surrounding capital punishment and persecution of ethnic Koreans in Japan. R survives hanging but loses his memory. The officials who witness the hanging debate how to proceed. They decide that they must persuade R to accept guilt by reminding him of his crimes, at this point the film moves into a funny and shocking Brechtian bender.
