Ignominious - I asked the Bing about the meaning of this word.

“Ignominious” is an adjective that describes something that is “deserving or causing public disgrace or shame” 1. It can also mean “marked with or characterized by disgrace or shame” 1. Here are some synonyms of “ignominious”: “humiliating,” “undignified,” “embarrassing,” “mortifying,” and “shameful” 1. The word “ignominious” comes from the Latin word “ignominia,” which means “disgrace” or “infamy” 1.

Here’s an example of how to use “ignominious” in a sentence: “The party risked ignominious defeat”

The Reader's Digest had one dedicated page on each issue "It Pays to Enrich Your Word Power" listing words, with the answers on another page. This was by Peter Funk. I am not sure whether this feature still exists - I haven't read an issue lately.

The other ways to increase your word power is mainly by reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing scrabble etc.

PS: My favourite pastime is Cryptic Crossword Puzzles.
