    my point
if normal FD gives you 16% for 3 months and treasury bills only about 20% for 3 months or ?

    example.
    FD rate ( 16% for 3 months )100,000 x 16/100 = 16000 after 3months for FD? or its 16 % for 12 months and 16000/12 =1333 x 3 = 4000 after 3months?

    treasury bills 20% , same as FD? or after 3 months will get 100,000 x 20/100 = 20,000 ?

please explain . podak confused .
fd rate also mentioned per annum ... so for 3 months rate is only 16% /3

fd rate also mentioned per annum ... so for 3 months rate is only 16% /3
    FD for 3 months for 12% = 12/4 = 3% for 3 months
    TB for 3 months for 20% = 20/4 = 5% for 3 months

And remember that to get 100,000 you only need to pay the amount, minus the interest. Meaning

    100,000 x 5/100 = 5,000
    100,000 - 5,000 = 95,000

You only need to pay Rs. 95,000 to get a Treasury bill of the face value of Rs. 100,000 where you can cash after 3 months

PS - Pls correct any mistake

    FD for 3 months for 16% = 16/4 = 4% for 3 months
    TB for 3 months for 21% = 21/4 = 5.25% for 3 months

And remember that to get 100,000 you only need to pay only the amount, minus the interest. Meaning

    100,000 x 5.25/100 = (5,250) x 3 = 15,750
    100,000 - 15,750 = 84,250

You only need to pay Rs. 84,250 to get a Treasury bill in the face value of Rs. 100,000.

You pay 84,000 to get a TB of Rs. 100,000 which you can cash after 3 months

PS - Pls correct any mistake

In addition, you might be abel to cash out early by selling the Tbill to someone else, but the demand may be less or high depending on the ongoing TBill rates.

    Auction usually happens on wednesday.

Say we bough 3 months tbills last week at 21%.
This week if they issue another set for 24%,

People would sought 24% bills over 21%, so you might have to sell yours at a lesser rate than 21% due to lesser demand.

Same way if the trend of the rate shows a decline, say this week 20% and so on, people would sought the ones at 21% which were giving a higher rate.

20% in both cases is per anum (12 months).

TBills are the safest instrument between the two in theory, because you get goverment's guarantee that they'd pay at the maturity. But the catch is you have to wait whole 3 months to redeem at the promissed rate. I don't know the conditions and consequences of premature redemption of FDs.
